Real Time with Bill Maher is a topical, political talk show. It is hosted by comedian, Bill Maher who had previously hosted Politically Incorrect.
Format
The show generally follows a set format, beginning with a monologue from Maher. This is then followed by a one on one interview, often with a politician, author, celebrity or campaigner. The main part of the show has Maher with two or three guests, discussing the week's news stories. These guests are also usually politicians, journalists or celebrities. Since Maher acknowledges that his audience and most of his guests are politically liberal, he will try to make a point of trying to get a conservative voice on the panel when he can and admits it can be like "coming into the lion's den" for them. This is usually broken up with Maher doing a brief comedy segment and later, another interview. This last interview used to often be conducted by satellite and exclude the other guests, but more recently has involved them arriving in person and sitting next to Maher for the rest of the show. The show always ends with a comedy segment called New Rules in which Maher talks about the things that annoy him and usually ends with him commenting on current political issues.
Alternate Format
Occasionally, in recent seasons, the show has adopted a different format. Instead of the above format, the show centers on three successive one on one interviews. It is still ended with New Rules.
