Can Kevin Smith do horror?

I saw Red State last night in Chicago. I think he did a great job with this film. I agree with Richard Kelly. This is not your typical Smith film. The first 10 minutes or so are the closest to a Kevin Smith movie you get with this movie.

It's not a "typical" horror film either. There is blood in the film but it's not the usual kind of horror we've seen in the last 10-15 years. It's closer to Rosemary's Baby than the slasher or gore type films we've seen. That said, it's obviously not as great as RB. "Horror" is just the easiest genre label to slap on it if you HAD to put it in only 1 section of the video store. Kevin has said it's horror in the sense that these people believe the things they say and what they say is frightening. I would agree with this.

Besides Cop Out, I haven't actually seen a Kevin Smith film.

Cop Out is a Kevin Smith film in the terms that he directed it. Everything else he also wrote. I feel that makes a big difference in his movies. The dude is a storyteller first and foremost. I think that's why he's a better writer and editor than director.

It sounds terrible but I really want this to fail so Smith is even closer to disappearing from having any influence on my sphere of media attention. Sick of hearing the guy whining after putting out nothing but shit for over a decade; If I hadn't turned it off after about 40 minutes, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back would be one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I expect a decent conventional horror movie and that's about it. Something like Vacancy or Frailty or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, put in a blender.

I have now seen Red State and can say that it is nothing like those movies.

The movie came to LA's famous Wiltern theater where it was screened by Smith and followed by a QA session with him and some of the actors.  It was an awesome experience.

The movie itself is not really a horror movie in the archetypal sense.  It does not follow all of the tropes (it does certainly follow some of them though), and the vibe that I got was not out and out scary as it was just unsettling and creepy.
