Kevin Smith Would Like to Distribute His Own Movies Now, Thank You Very Much

I think this whole dog-and-pony show with the distribution was a complete farce.

Smith must have known for months he was self-distributing to have lined up all of his exhibition dates and he strung everyone along like chumps.

I just think it's a bit deceitful and self-indulgent.

@CashBailey: He admitted he's known for a while he was going to self-distribute it here... somewhere. Typical really long post by Smith, but he said that he started talking about doing that a few days into shooting the movie.

But he tweeted just hours before the film played that it doesn't have a distributor yet.

Whether he was being cute or just flat-out lying to prolong the charade, you'd have to ask him.

I used to love Kevin Smith, but ever since Zack & Miri didn't perform as well as he hoped, he's been a blowhard that is nothing but annoying.

It's Sundance, so the self-indulgent part is kind of a gimme.

As a huge fan of his movies, I've still always thought that his writing is much better than his directing.  That said, how he plans to self distribute is a terrible idea.  His target audience is the prime demographic that uses torrents and other means of downloading movies.  If he does limited releases of all these movies from now on, they will not sell many tickets at all.  It won't last very long.

I am terribly sick of hearing about Kevin Smith. People keep giving him way too many chances to prove himself.

Great move because I like Kevin's taste in films more than I like his actual films. His last good film was Mall Rats.  Everything after that went from broken to bad to worse.  Let's be real, Chasing Amy has three good scenes none of which have anything to do with the actual story.

Kevin as a pimp unknown talent sounds a lot more exciting than Jersey Girl II or Cop Out 2: Going for Broke.

Whats the over/under on Kevin Smith becoming the Bret Farve of directors?

Smith taking a break from direction is probably family related - moving productions out across the country is just not good from the wife and growing kid's point of view. I can see Smith returning to directing a Clerks III or something after Harley has graduated high school.

Or he realized that he's lost his touch. Clerks II was rough at the edges (the dance scene is one of the biggest Big Lipped Alligator Moments EVER and we are talking about the Goddamn Clerks), but it was saved by his usual brilliant dialogue, Zack and Miri was abysmal and Cop Out I refuse to even discuss.

If he wants to return, he better returns with something on the level with Chasing Amy.

Smith said already Red State might be his last film, he wants to do podcasting from now on as his main thing. Which is fine, he's better at it than movies. But with his own production company, he can let other people make dumbass view askew universe movies like Jay and Silent Bob Still Like Star Wars.

I wish Kev the very best of luck in whatever endeavours he ventures into in the future & I'm still really curious to see Red State.

Please no more movies.  I like Kevin Smith as a person but his films are awful and I never understood the appeal of tired Star Wars references and the need to show Jason Muse's ballsack.

I have been a fan of Kevin Smith since his first film, but I haven't liked all his films. He's not a great director (which he's admitted) but a solid and interesting writer, even with the SW references and dick & fart jokes. He's a great public speaker and a funny man with very good taste in other people's flicks. He's only directed two things that weren't his own writing or where he was not in control: the pilot of Reaper and Cop Out. The results were mixed but he found both experiences unenjoyable.

I hope he continues to do what he enjoys. I, personally, can live with just the public speaking events and the podcasting. The comics are pretty good, and I hope he continues to write films from scratch and give it to someone else to direct for the first time (I'm being specific on the "from scratch" notion because he has been a script doctor before).

Hah-ha!! Yeah, I could have happily gone the rest of my life without seeing that.
