I was just looking at this movie when I started browsing Netflix and this movie is already up on the Instant Streaming. I haven't liked a lot of Kevin Smith's later movies but perhaps I'll check this out. Anyone else seen it and if so, what're your thoughts?

Not terrible but not exactly great either.  I would say your either going to think it is ok or absolutely hate it.  My opinion is that it was the first time I enjoyed a Kevin Smith since Mallrats.  My only complaint is I wish they would of done more with Stephen Root's character.

Watch a little over half of it and you're good.

I like Kevin Smith as a person and a podcaster and I love his earlier movies, but Red State just didn't feel good to me. Lots of half-realized under-delivered ideas. Cast did a great job, but I can honestly say I have no idea what this movie was supposed to be.

It was a great idea... like awesome. Sadly it was done by someone who does not get the genre. The cast struggled with what they had and it lacked in a decent narrative.

I watched it Wednesday and I actually really enjoyed it.

Now that it's on Instant Streaming, I'll check it out.

I personally really liked the film. Of course, I'm a big Smith fan, but even if this wasn't his, I'd still really like it.

Though the proven maturity of Smith as a filmmaker definitely did help, it wasn't the single linchpin for the entire film's quality. I just like this kind of film.

Someone unaware of Smith's involvement might enjoy it more. Up until the end, where all of the government people are sounding like 13 year old boys. Then you begin to wonder what kind of manchild wrote such awful dialog for these men and you see the credits. Its hard to believe anyone involved with the first 45 minutes of this film had anything to do with the last 20.

I'm shocked that so many of the duders on here thought it was "okay". I just finished watching it with my roommate. He seemed to think it was really good but I sat there enjoying every moment of the movie and really really thought it was great. I loved the dialogue and the camera work was brilliant. I can see why some people wouldn't like it but it really left a good impression on me and I'm glad I watched it.

@EightBitShik: The last scene completely killed the movie.  It just wrapped up everything too nicely and the dialogue was too Kevin Smithy in a movie that was unlike anything Kevin Smith had done before.  Seriously if it had ended during what would of been a great ambiguous stopping point it would of been a ballsy move that would of made me actually respect Kevin Smith again.

Not his best movie, but I really enjoyed it. That 15 minute speech by Michael Parks was a bit too preachy for me, though.

Still, this was a gigantic step forward from Cop Out. I look forward to Hit Somebody.
