I actually think The Island is one of Bay's best films
@Jay_Ray: Finally! While I don't really think it's his best, or one of his best rather, I always thought The Island was pretty decent. I'm glad someone agrees with me. Though, I suppose I've always been a bit more forgiving with Michael Bay's movies than most.
I actually really like this film, but then again, I'm a sucker for Bay's films.
I actually really enjoyed The Island. I gotta say, I'd much prefer to watch that than Transformers (the first one, as it's the only one I've actually seen.)
I would never say it was an amazing film, but I would say I think it gets underrated. Besides, Ewan McGreggor is awesome, and Rorie explained why Scarlett Johanson wins. :P
He had to reuse the footage for Transformers 3 because one of the stunt women got severely injured during the original shoot and they didn't want to use footage where someone is actually getting hurt. Plus most of the shots used in TF3 never appear in the Island because they were alternate angle shots he never used in that movie.
Also, I wonder if anyone gives flack to James Cameron for basically having Avatar be Pocahontas. Anyways, this was an interesting RR.
"He learned almost too late that man is a feeling creature... and because of it, the greatest in the universe. He learned too late for himself that men have to find their own way, to make their own mistakes. There can't be any gift of perfection from outside ourselves. And when men seek such perfection... they find only death... fire... loss... disillusionment... the end of everything that's gone forward. Men have always sought an end to the toil and misery, but it can't be given, it has to be achieved. There is hope, but it has to come from inside, from Man himself." -Peter Graves as Dr. Paul Nelson in It Conquered The World
So you could say The Island is a clone of the original?
... sigh
@TekZero: It lost money in theatrical (you deduct 50% of its grosses to account for the theater's cuts) and probably managed to become profitable in DVD sales, but was in no way comparable to Bay's other movies. It opened in fourth place in America, to give you an idea.
I think I heard about the Island due to the controversy back when it was released. However, this remake rematch is pretty fascinating since I have no idea about the contents of the actual movies themselves. The historical background is also intriguing. Great feature, five puppies!
Also, the worst part of The Island was at the end when they went in to destroy the secret clone base and they find the giant "Flipping this switch will destroy the entire complex" lever. Why would they build a lever like that!?
:(
As this was playing I kept thinking 'didn't mst3k do commentary for clonus?' and sure enough Rorie brings it up at the end. Good times.
