Renly Baratheon is the younger brother of King Robert Baratheon and a member of the king's small council.

Overview

As a member of House Baratheon, Renly's family crest is the crowned stag on a yellow background.  (The crown was added to the stag of their crest when his brother Robert Baratheon took the throne.)

Although he is the youngest of the three brothers, Renly currently serves as Lord of Storm's End, and is also Master of Laws on King Robert's small council.  Renly is a very charismatic and likable person.

Major Plots

Renly is having a secret affair with Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers.  During an intimate scene, Loras works on convincing Renly that perhaps he should be king rather than his brother Robert, especially because he is more well-loved by the people.  Loras offers to back Renly with the money and resources of House Tyrell should he decide to make a move for the throne.
 
When Robert is on his death bed, Renly approaches Eddard Stark and proposes an alliance to take control of the Iron Throne before Cersei Lannister can secure her grasp on it.  Ned rebuffs him because the proposal would involve Renly ruling rather than his older brother Stannis, whom he believes to be the rightful heir.  Renly and Loras subsequently depart King's Landing in great haste.
