Were it not for the always transfixing presence of Denzel Washington, Safe House would be just another unremarkable CIA thriller to toss on the heap.

Tobin Frost is a notorious rouge CIA agent, Matt Weston is an agent trying to get some experience. When Frost is arrested and taken to Weston in a nearby safe house everything goes awry and now they have to work together to survive and found out what's really happening.

Critical Reception

This movie was met with average to slightly above average reviews. It has a 52 out of 100 on Metacritic (which gives it the color Yellow and status Mixed) and a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes (which is Rotten). To its credit, only two of the 36 Metacritic reviews actually gave it a strikingly bad review; 11 liked it and 23 thought it was mediocre.

Box Office Performance

The movie opened to a huge $40 million in the US on its opening weekend and then held well. It also performed well overseas and has a worldwide total well over $150 million.

This Ryan Reynolds/Denzel Washington looks like it might've been cobbled together off of Tony Scott's cutting room floor, but damn if Denzel isn't downright enjoyable when he's in terse mode.
