Sam Quint is a local shark hunter in the fictional New England town of Amity island in Steven Spielberg's Jaws he is eventually killed by the shark that he is hunting.
Sam Quint is a local shark hunter who lives on Amity Island, he is also a survivor of the USS Indianapolis which was sank by a Japanese submarine.
Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) is the local shark hunter that the characters of Martin Brody (Roy Schreider) and Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) hire to help them hunt down the killer shark that has been terrorizing the town. During the course of the story, Brody and Hooper learn that Quint was a survivor of the USS Indianapolis. This experience arguably shapes the character of Quint who possibly suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome due to seeing his friends killed by sharks in the south-Pacific. During the course of movie, Quint becomes more and more obsessed with killing the shark that is wreaking havoc on the townsfolk of Amity Island. Quint becomes so enthralled with killing the shark that he destroys his ship's engine by over-taxing and and it's radio once Brody attempts to make a distress call after the shark damages the ships hull and begins to take on water. Quint meets his demise once the shark that the trio of men had been hunting, eats him.
Quint is your typical sailor, hard drinking and loves a good time. However, it is very possible that he suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome due to his experience surrounding the USS Indianapolis.
