Can this movie be enjoyed by someone who doesn't like video games

I myself take the stance that everyones opinions are their own, it does not bother me when people don't like the things I like.  However, when they dislike something for reasons that are nonsensical, I take issue with that.

I have a very opinionated friend, he has something to say about everything.  I really loved Scott Pilgrim and he hated it.  When asked why he hated it, he simply attributed it to his disdain of video games.  He has always had a dislike of video games, he's never owned a system or had any interest to.

I argued that you could not be a fan of video games and still enjoy this film.  It's funny on it's own merits, video game lore not withstanding.  It requires no standing knowledge of video games to enjoy.  The references are there, but they're not crucial to the story or the comedy.  Music, and the society surrounding music, plays an equally big part of the milieu the film delves into.

What do you all think, is not liking video games a good reason to not like this film?

I say yes, because despite that aspect, it's very funny. Edgar Wright has impeccable comedic timing and some amazing humor. Also, deep down, this is just a romantic comedy on speed, full of situations, characters, and attitudes that most people could identify with. The heartbreaks, the "fight" for ironic youthful love, and so forth. It's a strangely heartfelt film... that also kicks ass at the same time. It would've been even more amazing if the ending was handled better as well...

I'd say yes, because that film's kinetic style and amazing comedy are amazingly amazing

Sure. You might not enjoy it as much as someone who loves games and has a huge knowledge of them and gets all of the references though. It's still a very funny and imaginative movie.

The film has no plot or characters so I can't really be that funny or entertaining unless you get the references that it loads onto you every couple of seconds.

I imagine you can enjoy it if only for the comedic timing.

I think you can appreciate the way all of it's executed, like the editing and such.

Definitely not, I went to see ti with my girlfriend and she loved it. She especially loved the unique style of it but enjoyed all the jokes and the story too. So if your friend is using that as an excuse, tell him to get out of it!

Yeah you still can, its just WAY better if you do like video games.

I guess you can, but the thing is that it loads the references on so much that if you don't like video games, like your friend, it'll get really annoying really fast. Hell, I love games and it started to annoy me. I think it helps if you like games, though, because the characters aren't great and are merely molded by the script (and by that token, the guy who wrote the graphic novels, since from what I've read it's almost word for word) to fit whatever joke they need. If there was a reel of just fights, though, that would win anyone over.

Considering this movie is effing brilliant in every way a movie can be.... then I'd say 'Yes'.

If you've ever laughed at a well-written, perfectly-timed piece of character-driven humour then you should LOVE this movie.
