Did free screening damage this film?

During Comicon Edgar Wright put on a load of free screenings of Scott Pilgrim. People who would of probably paid to see this film got to see it totally free.  I imagine he was trying ot build a good word of mouth, but that seams to have failed despite most great reviews.  I wonder if he had not had put on as many free shows it might of done better?

i think the people at comicon are more than willing to see it once so he didnt lose that much money

It's a niche film for an audience that is the most predisposed to pirate movies(nerdy teens).

if I got to go to that, I would still watch it again (maybe several times) and tell people to do so as well. Considering it was at comic-con, the people who go to go were looking forward to it the most, and maybe loved it the most. like @TheFaithfullyDeparted said, the people who saw it there were probably more than willing to see it again!

so not really

edit: if anything damaged the movie, it was poor timing and marketing that wasn't that well done.

I highly doubt that they lost any significant amount of money on that. even if they showed it to 1000 people, they lost 10 grand. which is $38,062,082 less than they need to make it back up... so, no, i don't think it damaged the film.

Defeat seven evil ex-boyfriends? That's easy. Once my girlfriend made me defeat twenty-five evil kittens. At least, I'm pretty sure they were evil.
