Okay seriously what is wrong with people?

I know I can pretty much safely say that I know why this movie bombed in the box office. I think is was the fact it went against The Expendables and Eat Pray Love, both movies has an audience. The Expendables is targeted for the male audience, and Eat Pray Love was targeted for the female audience. Who was Scott Pilgrim target for? It's not a movie your mother is going to want to go see.

It was basically put in a bad situation, if it was brought out this week where it's only competition is Vampire Sucks and The Lottery Ticket, it probably would have done better.  However I'm pretty sure it'll make back it's budget in DVD sales and become a cult classic....If not then I'll be extremely disappointed.

Now here is my problem, It's kind obvious that 60, maybe 70% of the human population are hypocrites, we deny it but it's true. Almost every website I go one, People whine all the time about "Hollywood is out of ideas!!! They aren't creative or original!! blah blah blah" but when an original and creative movie comes along that has been receiving almost nothing but praise from all the critics, they would rather ignore it and go see a typical 80's style action movie or another bad run of the mill cliche romance movie instead.

I understand that the audience for this movie is small, but that doesn't mean those who aren't the target audience won't enjoy this little gem either. The film is really funny, and you don't have to be a hipster to enjoy it's British American mixture of humor. The film is also beautiful to look at, and not an explosion in sight. Anyone who has played a video game will understand the visual jokes in this film. So you can't really say that there isn't something in this film that will have people enjoying this film. I brought my girlfriend to see this film, she hates video games and doesn't read comic books and she still liked the movie.

So why, why, why, why, WHY is this film still doing bad in the box office?!! There isn't anything not to like in this film, even Michael Cera wasn't terrible. At least his character has some sort of personality and story arc unlike his other movies and even if you do hate Michael Cera, the rest of the cast is AMAZING and carries this movie!!! Especially Kieran Culkan and Alison Pill. So one actor in the film isn't all that great, is it really a bad movie if only one actor is bad?

So I got a question to ask all you people, Why didn't you go see it?

and for those who did go see it, Why do you think it failed?

I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, just curious.

Also I want to give a personal "F*ck U"  to everyone this week who PAID to go see Vampires Suck, even if you paid to see it so you could review and make fun of it. Here is a perfect comedy, one written and directed by the same guy who did movies like Hot Fuzz and Shuan of the Dead and you PAID to go see that movie instead. I usually don't promote watching movies online but you could have done that instead and give your money to the people who actually put time and effort into making a good movie. Shame on all of you guys who paid to go see it!!! Shame on you!!!!

Because it has Michael Cera, it looks cheesy and based on a comic book. Sure it is a good movie but everyone that was interested in seeing it did see it.

I foresaw it failing. It's a videogame based romantic movie. People who like games won't like romance and people who like romance are probably turned off by the overstylized action.

1) It had terrible, terrible marketing.

2) It has Michael Cera in it.

Basically, you can't blame the average moviegoer for skipping past Scott Pilgrim. It's got a small target demographic and it had the misfortune to have a star who's currently hated on something fierce. For the record, I greatly enjoyed the movie and I thought Cera did a pretty good job as Scott. It's sad that it's been doing so bad, but like Wright's previous films I imagine it will find success once it comes to DVD and Bluray. It's a cult movie-it's not surprising it isn't doing so good.

What you can blame people for is going to see Vampires Suck. Because there is no excuse to justify letting that movie have your money. None whatsoever.

@TheFreeMan: Okay I can see how some people hate Michael Cera, and even though I think he did a good job as Scott , everyone else in the film was much better. However  was the marketing really terrible?

I recall there being a lot of TV spots for the movie, plus viral marketing (It's own website, and a a thing where you can make your own Scott Pilgrim Avatar), a clip was shown on the MTV movie awards and a video game available for download on the PlayStation Network. So I don't think it was marketed badly , and I definitely think people knew it was out there, they just didn't go for some reason.

damn shame, but it makes sense. Only a miricale, on the hands of the movie going public would've helped it. That didn't happen.

damn shame.

edit: yeah, these trailers aren't the best, either. I'm glad they kept "That Was Epic" out of the movie.

@TheFilmKiller:
the target audience was extremely small. it was targeted to people really into videogames and looks wierd (from the marketing) to all else. also this movie isnt the most original since its taken from a book but i get what you were trying to say but you answered your own question id much rather see Expendables then this

It wasn't so much the marketing as the advertisements. The TV spots, I thought, highlighted too many different things of the movie so that it made a conflicting image. A lot of them were just clips from the movie and then the logo. For example, there was the ad with the explanation "In musicals, when emotions get too high, people break into song. In Scott Pilgrim, people break into fights", and then moments after that you could see an ad where it was just the "Bread makes you fat?" clip. A lot of people I know just don't know what the hell the movie is like.

The viral marketing was good and man, I want to get the game (two more days until it's on 360, finally), but TV is where you can get the biggest potential audience and they dropped the ball there.

@TheFreeMan:   I got the demo on the PlayStation Network and it's awesome, pure classic style beat em up, Although I don't have the ten bucks to fully purchase it yet. When I do, I'm totally going to get the full version.

This and the funny thing is I think they marketed it as well as they could but I don't know if you can market a movie like this greatly.

That trailer is horrible. I really don't know where I stand on this because everyone who's seen it says to go and then I see something like that which is two minutes of video game references, special effects and 'This is epic!' and a terrible, rambly, not-in-any-way funny joke and immediately, I don't want to see it.

"Why didn't you go see it?"

Because I didn't like the books and I hate Michael Cera.

its sad to see the argument of "I wont see the movie cuz I hate Cera doing the same character". Well some other actors are doing the same and u aint bitching.

The movie is a win in edition, acting, story telling and in the soundtrack. Its just sad to see that from 5 went to 10 luckly its gonna become a cult movie like the other EW's movies.

I think the Michael Cera hate might've played into this failure more than people think. That, and a relative failure to market the movie to people who actually cared. I think they pushed it hard to teen boys, who, more likely than not, are not Cera's biggest fans, especially in a fight-heavy movie. Maybe if they had pushed it towards teen girls, who might've found the subject appealing, they could've pulled something off. Oh well.

It's target demographic is actually quite small, and they failed at marketing it to anyone outside that group.

I thought it was great, but I can understand the majority of movie going audiences "not getting it". It's basically a movie about 20-something hipster geeks FOR 20-something hipster geeks. Outside of that demographic, it's a tough sell.

That's very true, Samuel L Jackson plays the same character in almost every movie, and so does Al Pacino....why is it that when Michael Cera plays the same character people hate it?

I think it had a limited appeal.
