Sidney Prescott is still reeling from the rape and murder of her mother (for which she was a key witness) when two classmates, Casey and Steve, are brutally murdered, shaking the town to its core. After Sidney is threatened over the phone and then attacked in her own house she accuses her boyfriend, Billy, of orchestrating the entire thing, but even after he's arrested the killer .calls to say she's accused the wrong man again, indicating that her mother's supposed killer, Cotton Weary, is innocent. Suspicion then falls on Sidney's father, who is nowhere to be found. .
Meanwhile, tabloid reporter Gale Weathers is causing a stir with accusations that Sidney's mother was actually having an affair with Weary, leading to animosity between the two women. School is closed in light of recent events, but that doesn't stop the killer from offing the principal. Not yet knowing of the principal's demise several students get together for a house party at Stu Macher's house, providing and opportunity for the Ghostface killer start attacking the teens one by one in preparation for the final showdown.
