Sir Sean Connery (knighted in 2000) is a Scottish actor and producer known for his defining portrayal of James Bond throughout the 1960s and an Academy Award-winning performance in The Untouchables. Citing disappointment with the state of Hollywood and film production Connery announced his retirement from cinema in 2004.
Born August 25, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Thomas Sean Connery was a milkman and Royal Navy seaman, coffin polisher and more before helping out backstage at the King's Theatre in 1951 and becoming interested in acting. He took up bodybuilding around that time and within a couple years was in shape enough to place in competitions and also land a role in a touring production of South Pacific. One of Connery's first major film roles, costarring with Lana Turner in Another Time Another Place, was drama filled due to an incident on-set where Turner's boyfriend, mob-connected Johnny Stompanato, held a gun to his head after believing the two were carrying on an affair. He disarmed Stompanato and floored him, causing the aggravated gangster to be deported and Connery to have to lay low while heat from the mob cooled down.
Connery's breakout role came in 1962 when he was cast as James Bond in Dr. No and held the role for seven films. To this day Connery is widely considered to be the best actor to play the part. Though a prolific actor, Connery's only Academy Award was for his performance in 1987's The Untouchables, which earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor. He announced his retirement from acting in 2006 and despite rumors of a comeback has stuck to it.
