Overview
Shawn Michaels debuted in World Wrestling Entertainment on July 7, 1988 alongside his partner
Marty Jannetty as The Rockers. The had minor success until Michaels turned on Jannetty on December 2, 1991. During a "Barber Shop" segment hosted by
Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, Michaels superkicked him and threw him through a glass window. Jannetty disappeared and Michaels took on the nickname "The Heartbreak Kid."
In the summer of 1997, he formed a D-Generation X with
Triple H,
Chyna, and
Rick Rude as the Attitude Era began. With their irreverent behavior and skits, the group quickly rose in popularity and grew in size with the addition of the New Age Outlaws. Later that year at Survivor Series Michaels would be involved in an incident known as "The Montreal Screwjob", in which Michaels defeated
Bret "The Hitman" Hart for the
WWE Championship.
In 1998 at the Royal Rumble event, Shawn Michaels suffered a serious back injury during a Casket Match, causing him to retire after losing the WWE Championship at
WrestleMania XIV. In November, he returned in a non-wrestling role as the WWE Commissioner. In 2000 he handed the role over to
Mick Foley and left the WWE.
In 2002, Michaels returned and feuded with Triple H. After having a "non-sanctioned" fight at SummerSlam, Michaels returned to full-time in-ring action and captured the
World Heavyweight Championship in the Elimination Chamber at Survivor Series.
In 2006, Triple H and Michaels mended their relationship and became friends again, reforming D-Generation X as just the two of them. Unlike the first interation, they were a bit more family-friendly but still comedic. They feuded against the McMahons and later Rated-RKO (
Randy Orton and
Edge) until an injury put Triple H out of action in January 2007. The duo would continue to be allies and team up on occasion as DX for the next few years.
