Sigourney Weaver is an American actress and three-time Academy Award nominee, with roles in a number of iconic films from the past three decades. She is especially well known as the star of the Aliens franchise and Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar.
Born Susan Alexandra Weaver in Manhattan, New York, she took the name "Sigourney" at age 14 from The Great Gatsby character Sigourney Howard. Her parents and uncle were all involved in entertainment and Weaver continued in this tradition after graduating from Standford University and earning a Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1974. Following graduation she performed in several off-Broadway theatre productions and made her film debut with a minor role in 1977's Annie Hall. Weaver's breakthrough came in 1979 when she was cast as the female protagonist in Ridley Scott's hit sci-fi horror film Alien, earning her first award nomination and a place in film history.
Weaver made several critically successful movies over the next several years, including Ghostbusters, but box office success eluded her projects until 1986 when she was recast as tough-as-nails spacer Ellen Ripley in Aliens, a role which she was nominated for a best actress Oscar--the first time a sci-fi film actress has ever been recognized for such. Thanks to her performances in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl Weaver became one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and starred in such critically acclaimed movies as Copycat, Heartbreakers and Holes over the next decade. She once again teamed up with James Cameron to star in 2009's Avatar as Dr. Grace Augustine.
