It's hard to imagine a world without Bond, since they've been coming out for so long.

I dunno, Goldeneye was one of the darkest (if not the darkest) pre-Casino Royale film, I'd say. It's been a while since I've seen it, but shit was pretty serious in that one IIRC.

Though maybe not as serious as License to Kill (meat grinders AHOOOOYYYYY)

@Hailinel:
Actually the actor that got the closest to the original Ian Fleming version of Bond was Timothy Dalton. Ian Fleming's vision of James Bond was a violent, cunning, cynical and often times downright  vicious character, who was only a step above the average violent psychopath because his violent tendencies were used to protect the British Commonwealth. Dalton made a great Bond for those who had read Fleming's novels and short stories and it was a shame that he only made two films as Bond due to a large part because of anothermajor legal battle between Cubby Brocoli and Kevin McClory. Connery also exhibited alot of the ruthless traits of the orignal character though as his films progressed they became more tongue and cheek which reached its pinnacle in the campy Roger Moore films. Craig's Bond has the mean streak of Fleming's Bond however unlike Dalton's Bond, Craig's is more of pure brute who lacks the cunning that the original Bond character exhibited.

I'm actually going to create a list ranking all the James Bond films from best to worst  along with my thoughts on all the individual films and why they rank where they do. To drum up a little interest and maybe some controversy I will say that License to Kill and From Russia with Love sit atop my list tied as my favourite Bond films.
