Plot Synopsis

 Yay.
 Yay.
Rainbow Dash is getting ready for the Young Flier's Competition in Cloudsdale, so she's out perfecting her routine with Fluttershy, as well as trying, and failing, to make an enthusiastic cheerer out of her. But getting Fluttershy to even holler is the least of her worries since she still cannot achieve the final phase of her routine: the rarely seen Sonic Rainboom. Despite being the first, and only, pegasi to ever pull it off, ( The Cutie Mark Chronicles) performing this sound-barrier-breaking-and-rainbow-making maneuver is something that she has not been able to do ever since she was a filly. And a day before the competition, she fails to pull it off and instead hurdles herself into Twilight Sparkle's library, where the rest of the ponies are helping her clean.

Rainbow Dash still displays confidence though; bragging that she'll easily be able to pull off a Sonic Rainboom at the competition. Her only wish is that, because of Fluttershy's not-so-inspirational cheering, the rest of the girls could be there to see her compete and provide extra support. Other than that, she claims that winning the competition, which would allow her to spend a day with her heroes, the aerial troupe The Wonderbolts, is something that she'll easily be able to accomplish. But once she leaves, Fluttershy tells them that she really isn't ready to pull off the trick: having trying hundreds of times without any result. With that info, and her experience from attending fashion shows, Rarity can tell that Rainbow is nervous and eggs Twilight to find a spell that would allow them to watch her in Cloudsdale.

On the day of the competition, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy arrive at their hometown of Cloudsdale. Immediately, they run into a group of bullies from their school years. Dubbing her as "Rainbow Crash", they mock her for dropping/getting kicked out of flight school and laugh at the 'impossible' idea of her performing a Sonic Rainboom. With their comments, and Fluttershy's poor attempts to cheer her up, Rainbow Dash's confidence finally breaks. But then, Rarity and the rest of the girls arrive in Cloudsdale, but now Rarity is able to fly thanks to a majestic pair of magic-made wings. But because of the difficulty of the spell, Twilight chose not to perform it on the rest of them so used a cloud-walking spell so they may traverse Cloudsdale and cheer her on at the competition.

With regained confidence, the two pegusi offer the girls a tour of Cloudsdale while they wait. While touring the weather factory, Rarity lets her wings get to her head and shows them off whenever she can; Twilight warning that they are very delicate and shouldn't be used heavily. But, again, this doesn't stop her from showing them off to the workers, including the bullies from earlier and all the while depleting any remaining confidence Rainbow Dash had recovered. At one point, Rarity flies in front of the direct sunlight which illuminates the factory floor with a beautiful light show of colors. Awestruck, one worker suggests that Rarity competes in the competition. Now having totally forgotten why she was there in the first place, which was to cheer on Rainbow, Rarity accepts: much to the shock and horror of her friend.

"No, sweetie, you&squot;re not tripping acid: she is a contestant."

The competition begins, with the Wonderbolts providing guest judging and the event even being spectated by Princess Celestia herself. But backstage, Rainbow Dash is a nervous wreck and is far from ready to perform. So whenever she could, Rainbow Dash switches her number tags with other competitors to keep herself from going out. Rarity is also delaying herself, but this is just because she wants to look fabulous for her debut appearance. Finally, after much delay on their part, the girls are told to go out together due to time constraints. Rarity goes out to make a graceful performance, accompanied by classical music, while Rainbow Dash throws together her composure and carries out her own routine. But most of her routine goes wrong, much to the amusement of the bullies, leaving her with one last chance to win the competition: performing a Sonic Rainboom.

While getting ready for this make-or-break maneuver, Rarity performs her own grand finale. She flies up, high above Cloudsdale, towards the sun and using her translucent wings to shine a vivid display of colors over the city; leaving the spectators in awe. But in a consequence straight out of Greek mythology, the sun's heat causes her fragile wings combust, sending the unicorn into a free fall. The Wonderbolts jump into action, but Rarity's flailing knocks them out in midair, leaving it up to Rainbow Dash to save them all. Rainbow Dash flies towards Rarity at great speeds. So great that Rainbow Dash, with all of her might, finally pulls off the Sonic Rainboom. The rare display leaves the spectators and Rainbow's friends in awe, as well as leaving Fluttershy in uncontrolled whooping and hollering. She catches Rarity and the Wonderbolts in the nick of time and flies back up to Cloudsdale, leaving a spectacular rainbow over the stadium.

For her glorious Sonic Rainboom, and her act of bravery, Princess Celestia awards Rainbow Dash with the grand prize and names her that year's Best Young Flier. Combined with being personally greeted, and thanked, by the Wonderbolts, Rainbow Dash is overcome with unrestrained, fangirl-like glee. Even the bullies come down to apologize for their years of torment, and even offer to hang out with them. But Rainbow Dash has other plans and flies off to hang with her idols. All the while, after apologizing for her behavior, Rarity explains the lesson she learned to Princess Celestia. Having learned more than Twilight from this event, she tells of the importance of being there for your friends and "keeping your hooves on the ground."
