The Teller-Morrow family and their motorcycle club, The Sons of Anarchy, have kept the town of Charming mostly peaceful for a long time by forcing out drug dealers and criminals. But the peace may be at an end when the gang's violent means come back to bite them and rival crews move on their territory.

The first season begins with Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam) dealing with the birth of his child after his estranged, meth-addicted estranged wife Wendy collapses. The baby boy is delievered 10 weeks early after a C-Section is performed. Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal), Jax’s mother supplies Wendy with drugs while in the hospital which Wendy ends up overdosing on, Gemma does this so that Jax will maintain custody over his son, Abel.
Meanwhile, Sons of Anarhy Motorcylce Club Redwood Original (SAMCRO), is dealing with the theft and torching of their gun-assembly warehouse by another gang, the Mayans. This act ends up bringing in the Acohol Tobacco and Firearms agency to Chaming, California to investigate who operates the weapons facility. The agent who is sent is Josh Kohn (Jay Karnes) who is the abusive ex-boyfriend of Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff) Kohn has also been stalking Knowes. Kohn breaks-in and attempts to rap Knowles before she can shoot him in the stomach, Jax ends up coming to help her and shoots Kohn in the head. This ends up bringin in ATF agen Stahl to investigate the going-ons of SAMCRO.
In order to their continue gun-trafficking business Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and the some of the other members of SAMCRO patch over another club, the Devil’s Tribe. Also Harry ‘Opie” Winston (Ryan Hurst) failes to assassinate a target for the Real IRA and Bobby “Elvis” Munson (Mark Boone Junior) must complete it, however a young girl witnesses Elvis commit the murder. This young girl ends up providing Stahl with sketches of Elvis and Opie who are arrested. Stahl sets Opie up to look like an informant which Clay and Alex “Tig” Trager (Kim Coates) fall for. Clay orders Tig to kill Opie after they find wire taps on Opie’s truck and phones. Unfortunately Tig ends up killing Opie’s wife Donna. Clay makes the shooting look like another gang, the One-Niners, shot Donna instead of Tig.
Deputy Hale (Taylor Sheridan) tells Jax that Stahl set up Opie. Jax then realizes that it was Clay, not the One-Niners who ordered the shooting. Just as Tig is about to kill the girl that witnessed Opie and Elvis commit the murder, Jax stops him by putting a gun to his head. Tig does not kill the girl and Jax gives her enough money to flee California. Jax begins to internally question Clay and the direction that the club is heading which is a theme that ran throughout the season.
Season 2 brings in the threat of a new club, the League Of American Nationalists or LOAN who are a gang of white speratists. LOAN’s leaders want SAMCRO out of Charming, and attempt to drive them out by sexually assaulting Gemma. This act is lead by the group’s enforcer A.J. Weston (Henry Rollins) and a couple of other members. Ethan Zobelle, the groups leader, own daughter Polly lures Gemma into the trap, however Gemma remains silent on the ordeal.
Meanwhile SAMCRO decides to protect a pornography studio after one of their member, Big Otto (Kurt Sutter), from prison, asks them to help his wife Luann (Dendrie Taylor). Luann is being threatened by a rival porographer Georgie Caruso threatens her business. Opie, however is still trying to deal with the death of his wife Donna by devoting himself even more to the club, at the expense of his children’s attention. After a failed attempt on Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), SAMCRO attemps retaliation on Zobelle only to end up in jail. While in jail, Jax and Clay end up fighting eachother after agent Stahl provokes each of them. This results he in Jax wanting to leave the group, but he is convinced to stay after Gemma tells him and clay about her rape. This also unites him and Clay. Tig finnaly tells Opie that it was him who murdered Donna and the club almost falls apart because of this.
SAMCRO eventually finds out that Zobelle’s real intention is to get in business with the Mayans to supply prisons with Heroin. SAMCRO tells Weston about this, and due to his deep ravial beliefs will not do business with the Hispanic Mayans. This information causes a tear between Weston and Zobelle. Weston is eventually arrested on suspicion for setting fire to Luann’s porn studio and SAMCRO go to confront Zobelle at one of his businesses but Zobelle tells the police that he is in posession of drugs and is subsequently arrested he does this to save his life and his daughter’s life. However Zobelle is actually an FBI informent and is released. Zobelle turns to the Mayans for support now that Weston is gone. Weston however is killed by Jax in a tatoo parlor.
The ATF however is attempting to bring down the True IRA, and because of Chibs are able to apprehend Edmond Hayes, Chibs ends up telling the club about being an informant. Agent Stahl and the ATF hold Hayes in an attempt to lure his father Cameron Hayes out and arrest him. Edmund’s is killed by Agent Stahl after attempting to kill her and escape custody. Polly Zobelle arrives at Edmund’s safe house (due to them having an affair) only to find Gemma, who had been folowing her there. Gemma then kills Polly with Stahl witnessing the crime. Stahl lets Gemma go only to frame her for the killing of Edmund. Cameron falls for the ploy and kidnaps Abel and threatens Tara.
The season ends with SAMCRO ambushing Ethan Zobelle who is with the Mayans. The Mayans retreat and Zobelle flees on his own. SAMCRO is unable to get to Zobelle before he esccapes to Budapest, Jax is unable to get Abel back before Cameron gets away with him on his boat. Gemma is last seen riding with Chief Unser (Dayton Callie) out of Charming.
Season three opens just a few days after season two finishes. While SAMCRO is trying to settle things in Charming, Gemma and Tig are holed up in Rogue River, Oregon. The club is yet again unable to track down Cameron and he is able to flee to Belfast, Ireland with Abel. Shortly after arriving there, he is killed on order from his priest-brother Father Ashby (James Cosmo) after confessing his sins.
Gemma returns to Charming after placing her dementia affected father Nate Madrock (Hal Holbrook) in assisted living, however she sufferes an arythmia and collapses after learning about the abduction of Abel. Jax meanwhile makes a deal with ATF agent Stahl to give up Jimmy O (Titus Welliver) and his contacts in the IRA in exchange for a downgrade of impending weapons charges against the club and his mother’s freedom, the rest of SAMCRO is unaware of his actions. Elliot Oswald (Patrick St. Esprit) agrees to smuggle SAMCRO to belfast after they learn of Abel’s location.
After SAMCRO arrives in Ireland, Ashby offers them Abel in exchange for the murder of Jimmy O. Agent Stahl warns Jax to not try and kill Jimmy but SAMCRO decides to go through with it anyways and plans to kill Jimmy when he is on a protection run. However, Jimmy, being forwarned from Liam O’Neil (Arie Verveen) and Keith McGee (Andy McPHee) plants a bomb that kills several of SAMBEL members. SAMCRO eventually torture and kill both O’neil and McGee. Ashby ends up telling Jax the location of Abel but attempts to persuade him to allow the child to be adopted so to not have to life the clube life. Jax agrees to leave the child with the family that is caring for it, only to have Jimmy kill the family and take the baby so that he can use him as trade bait for a safe passage to America. However, Father Ashby decides to trade himself for the child, and Abel is returned to Jax.
Meanwhile back in Charming, Hector Salazar former president of the Calavers MC. Kidnapps Tara and her boss Margaret who were on their way to an abortion clinic. Tara being a few weeks pregnant and recently broken up with Jax decides to get the procedure. Salazar informs Piney (William Lucking) that he wants $250,000 and the murder of Marcus Alverez (Emilio Rivera). Tara is able to negotiate the freedom of Margaret after attacking Salazar’s girlfriend who later dies. SAMCRO returns to Charming due to the hearing for their weapons charges and to try and find Tara.
Salazar is killed by Jax and Tara is returned to him while Opie proposes to a pornstar he has been dating Lyla (Winter Ave Zoli.) Jimmy meanwhile is negotiating with the Russian mob to aid him in an escape to South America, however SAMCRO is able to negotiate a deal with the Russians, agreeing to pay $2 million dollars (which is counterfeit) in exchange for Jimmy. Jax ends up telling agent Stahl where Jimmy is being held so that his end of the deal can be kept up and the club’s prison sentence reduced. Clay asks how she knew Jimmy would be there and she tells him that Jax told her, the club then calls Jax a dead man. Stahl then proceeds to transport the imprisoned SAMCRO members via an ATF van, but is stopped by Chief Unser who tells her of an IRA threat down the road. Stahl is left alone affter the other ATF agents go to investigate. Then, Piney, Chibs, Kozik and Opie arrive. Chibs kills Jimmy after giving him a Glasgow Smile and Opie kills Stahl reminding her that she was responsible for the death of Donna. The entire sccene is made to look as if the IRA are respobsible. It is revealed to Jax that SAMCRO knew of his plan from the very beginning. The season ends with Tara reading the letters that Maureen had placed in Jax’s bag that tell of John Teller’s awareness that Clay and Gemma were going to kill him. Jax has yet to read them and ends up accepting Clay’s vision of SAMCRO and rejecting his fathers original vision.
Season four begins 14 months after the end of the third season with the SAMCRO members who were improsened being released. They return to Charming only to meet Sheffic Eli Roosevelt (Rockmon Dunbar.) Roosevelt is not allowing any club members who are parolled to where their club vests deeming them to be a form of gang association. Roosevelt is also helping the federal Attorney’s office to build a RICO case against the club.
Meanwhile Jax proposes to Tara on the eve of Opie’s wedding to Lyla, Tara accepts after Jax tells her that he plans on leaving the club. Clay uses the wedding as a cover to traffic guns to the Russian mob. However, SAMCRO betrays the Russians in an act of retaliation because of an attack on Jax when he was in prison. The group kills several Russians including an undercover agent who was working with US Attorney Linlcon Potter (Ray McKinnon) who is also building the RICO case against SAMCRO.
Gemma begins to question Jax’s motives for leaving the club after she finds one of Maureens letters at Jax’s house. Clay however has agreed to mule cocaine for the cartel in exchange for money and protection from the Russian mob, Jax sees this risk taking as a way for Clay to stockpile money for when he leaves the club. Jax only agrees to the drug trafficking if Jax is allowed to leave the club when Clay leaves and Opie becomes president. The other members of SAMCRO are split on the matter however.
