Mentor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The mentor and sensei to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter is a large mutated rat who has raised the turtles since before their mutations. Depending on the origin story Splinter was either the pet of Hamato Yoshi and learned ninjutsu after mimicking his training or Yoshi himself. His mutation is usually from an accident or at the hands of Shredder.
In the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series the origin story for Splinter diverged from the original story set up in the comic books. Instead of being a pet of Hamato Yoshi, Splinter was Yoshi himself. The story says Yoshi had lived in Japan and was apart of and led the Foot Clan. One of his students, Oroku Saki, would challenge Yoshi to fights attempting to take over the Foot Clan. Yoshi eventually lost to Saki and was banished from the clan and forced him to move to New York. Unable to find a place to live Yoshi lived in the sewers and found four pet turtles who would eventually stumble upon the ooze that would transform them all.
Now a mutated rat Yoshi became Splinter and began teaching the mutated turtles how to be more like humans as well as the ways of ninjutsu. Throughout the series Splinter serves as the turtles teacher rather than a father character.
Splinter's origin in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie more closely followed the comic book origin story. Splinter was instead the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi when he lived in Japan and would mimic Yoshi's training and fighting moves from his cage. When Yoshi left Japan with his love they were followed by Yoshi's rival, Oroku Saki, who ambushed Yoshi killing both him and his wife. When Splinter saw this from his cage he lept onto Saki's face, scarring him, before Saki took a swipe at Splinter's ear.
Now without a home or a master Splinter fled into the sewers where he eventually found four turtles covered by a broken canister of ooze. After also being effected by the ooze the five animals mutated into the teenage mutant ninja turtles and their master Splinter. As the turtles and Splinter grew in their mutations he taught them the art of ninjutsu and how to fight honorably and invisibly.
Once the turtles are grown, Splinter begins to allow them to venture up to the surface and help out the citizens of New York. The turtles stumble upon the evil plan of the Foot Clan and their leader, the Shredder. The Shredder eventually becomes annoyed with the turtles prowess in fighting sensing something special in their training and has Splinter kidnapped. Splinter spends his time chained up at the Foot Clan headquarters where he is interrogated by Shredder eventually coming to the realization that Shredder is Saki.
Shredder has a plan to defeat the turtles himself but Splinter is also freed by Casey Jones and arrives in time to stop Shredder from killing one of the turtles. Shredder becomes enraged realizing that Splinter is the very rat that scarred him long ago and attacks Splinter. Splinter easily glances off Shredder's attack and due to Shredder's insistent aggression causes his own fall to his assumed death.
Throughout this film and the next Splinter is more of a father figure to the turtles giving the constant advice, calming and consoling them through troubled times, and loving them.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Splinter learns more about the origin of the ooze that caused the mutation for the turtles and himself. He reveals that he kept the canister that the ooze came from revealing the company that dumped it, TGRI. The same company has been trying to clean up their mistakes but their lead scientist, Professor Perry, is kidnapped by a not very dead Shredder.
Splinter serves more as father figure throughout this film as well, providing advice, assistance, and backstory but having little to do with action scenes. The turtles have grown to be much more self reliant though still need to be punished from time to time.
The third and final live action film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Splinter had a much more downsized role. After the turtles accidentally go back in time into feudal Japan the four honor guards replace them. Splinter spends most of the movie being looked after, along with the four ancient japanese men, by Casey Jones.
Splinter is the typical wise old mentor portrayed throughout many films. He is a very skilled martial arts teacher and mentor to the ninja turtles. For the most part he stays very calm and patient both when teaching his students and during battle. He is often portrayed as having a teacher/student relationship with the turtles sometimes extending into a deeper father/son relationship. Despite the separation in age Splinter does enjoy a good slice of pizza just like his young students.
Splinter usually wields no weapon and serves wholly as a teaching device for the turtles. Occasionally, though, Splinter must help his young students out and is well versed in a variety of weapons including sais, nunchakus, bo staffs, katanas, and a bow and arrows
