In the past few years, driven mostly by the awesome folks at Mondo Tees, there's been a movement towards high-quality, limited-edition, fine art prints inspired by movies, video games, and television shows. Maybe it's because I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate a piece of art that more abstract, or maybe it's just the pleasure of the known, but I have gotten sucked into this trend hard-core.
There's just something awesome about seeing a really high-quality, beautiful image, that touches on whatever campy, nerdy bullshit I happen to be into. And, as a grown man, this lets me hang an Evil Dead 2 poster up in my apartment and not be deeply ashamed when company comes over.
So from now on, I'm going to post the exceptionally cool ones I find here. I'll also note if I'll be buying it or not. Most of the time... sigh... the answer will be yes.
Here's the first:
Just look at Ricardo Montelbon looking sexy as all hell up there. He's even out-sexying Kirk, which I guess is kind of his thing. For those who don't know, this is based on an episode of classic Star Trek called "Space Seed," that set-up probably the best of the Trek movies, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.
Apparently Mondo Tees is doing a whole series of these, and this first one just kills it. The overall design is crisp and clean, the color pallette is great - look how those reds pop against the muted blues, golds and beige background. They even worked in cranky old Doctor McCoy, and those pseudo-DNA strand looking things tie nicely into the theme of the episode in question. It's a great piece, and I'm excited to see more from these guys.
BUYING?: This is a tough one for me, but I'm going to pass. If it wasn't a series of them, I would jump all over this, but there are a few other episodes I might want a poster from instead of Space Seed... and that whole "These are cool to have out when company comes over" thing goes away pretty quickly once you have multiple Star Trek posters.
Anyway, this goes on sale at Mondo today at a random time. Check out their Blog and Martin Ansen's site to see more awesome work.
