Trivia:

The bug-like parasites in this episode were the writers' initial incarnation of the Borg, being a hive mind collective that assimilates civilizations by growing inside a host body. The "homing signal" sent out at the end of Conspiracy was intended to call for the insects' invasion of the Federation. Instead, in some part due to negative feedback from viewers, the writers introduced the Borg as a cybernetic collective instead. The "Conspiracy" aliens never appeared again.
