Here's a foreign poster of this film because foreigners love Star Wars slightly more than us Americans.
Here's a foreign poster of this film because foreigners love Star Wars slightly more than us Americans.

As of today, The Phantom Menace has become the eleventh film to cross the $1 Billion mark. Since its re-release in 3D the film has somehow made another $74,304, 790 ($36,804,790 domestically and $37,500,000 overseas) and that was extremely unexpected. I was not aware that that many people went out to see this film in 3D as it had only been released onto blu-ray a few months earlier and knowing LucasFilm, there'll probably be another release of the film onto blu-ray but in 3D instead. I really had no idea that lots of people would actually go out and fork over like 11 bucks to see this film in 3D. So is anyone else completely baffled as to why this made this much money upon its re-release and why George Lucas is even bothering to re-release Return of The Jedi in 2017?

Also is anyone else surprised this made slightly more money overseas than here in the United States? I had no idea Star Wars was more popular worldwide than it is here in the US but I guess it is. And I should also say, I actually quite like this film and am sort of happy to see this make over a billion dollars worldwide. I should I contributed in 1999 as a 4 (almost 5) year old kid when I want and saw it and almost went to see the film in 3D but then I found out there wasn't very much 3D and that it wasn't worth the price.

I blame you all.

Yo, for as much mess as people talk, people still see Star Wars movies.

Gross. I didn't contribute to that. I can put that on my tombstone. I didn't kill anybody, I only sneezed on a few people, and George Lucase hasn't seen a dollar from me in 20 years.

I'd rather it be Star Wars, even the movies everyone generally hates, than Avatar or Titanic.

Star Wars just makes money. How many of us know people who complain and complain about the sequels then they went out and bought the blu ray editions? I know a few. The only interest I have in Star Wars anymore is if they release the ORIGINAL versions for me to purchase. I have no interest in George Lucas' additions that overall ruined the quality of the original trilogy OR is abominations that are the prequels. GET HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN OUT OF ROTJ!!!! The most offensive addition George made in my opinion.

I call bologna. You can't count re-releases with original releases. There were changes beyond the 3D that technically make this a different movie.

I'm only surprised by the fact that it hadn't already grossed that much. I, like Ryan before me, am also free of any culpability; George Lucas hasn't invidiously snatched a dollar from me in quite sometime.

People are actually going to see this? I work at a big movie theater in the city, and the turnouts have been miserable, I'm talking 4 or 5 people per showing. Maybe the fact that it's a 21+ theater most of the time has to do with it.

Unfortunately the worst movies usually make the most money, the same applies to music. My theory is that the people (kids) to whom Episode 1 was their first experience with Star Wars are now just young enough to be wowed by 3D but still old enough to be consumers who buy movie tickets.

Also I don't think that Episode 1 is a bad movie by any stretch. It's really bad by Star Wars standards (if there is such as a thing as Star Wars standards anymore, probably not), but it's still a really fun scifi blockbuster.

Yes. More Star Wars need to be cross that mark but they'd need to make some serious money upon re-release to do it. Revenge of the Sith could but I seriously doubt it will gross more than $100 Million if it is re-released in 3D in 2014.

@CrimsonAvenger: Is that the plan? Star Wars 3-D rerelease once a year? Thats way too long >.< How about two a year so I won't age nearly a decade waiting for all of them. I though I heard they're planning to release the Blu-Ray 3-D version sometime this year.

Guys another terrible IP breached a billion this terrible movie is revenge. What a sickening thought process. Its never good when bad films do this well because it enables more bad films. How is it that there are already a bunch of other shitty billion dollar films a good reason for this piece of shit to do well? Mind numbing.

Yeah, substituting one bad film for another isn't much of a solution. I mean, I don't care for the Pirates films--I don't mind if they continue to wring that franchise out. But, I still have a fondness for the original Star Wars films, so it would bother me to an agonizing degree if more Star Wars films were released--and they will be. It sucks. The end.

@FinalDasa:

Yup, George Lucas plans on releasing one a year with Return of The Jedi being released in 2017. By that time nobody will be seeing 3D movies (that if it is still around). Yeah, Panasonic will be releasing the Phantom Menace in 3D on blu-ray this spring. Source: Techradar
