The Star Wars franchise has been catching a lot of flak since the release of The Phantom Menace, and the majority of it has been deservedly so. But most ire is directed at the prequel trilogy, which is a complaint that I personally find perplexing. This isn't me locking my lips to George Lucas' ass and taking a long draw, but rather my genuine respect for Revenge of the Sith. I'm not even going to begin any sort of coherent defense for its predecessors -- it would take hours of my time to work through the rationalizations to do so -- but I really do find the final third of the trilogy quite enjoyable, and I honestly hold it with (or near to) the same regard as the original three films.

There are problems, sure, and there's no defense for them. Hayden Christensen is a plague to the franchise, but even through his whinny and wholly unconvincing performance it's easy to grasp at the inner turmoil and overwrought naivety that leads him down the path that transplants his consciousness into a walking respirator. There's General Grevious, who seems to have been created for the sole purpose of giving Little Johnny a new action figure to play with, and there's Padme's inane, inexplicable death at the end of the film. But on the whole, working with those issues and getting past them, I can't help but feel that Rotten Tomatoes is right on the mark with their aggregate score for the movie.

And I think it's Ewan McGregor that rescues the production from the pits of mediocrity where I'm concerned, pulling off Obi-Wan Kenobi in a way that I think would make Alec Guinness proud. Even after his unjustifiably bad acting in Episode I and macabre of shoddy one-liners in Attack of the Clones, I feel that he really comes into his own here. Of course, I can't contribute my personal affinity for what some consider to be a blight on their beloved fantasy to one actor alone, and so I'll cite Ian McDiarmid for an outstanding performance as Emperor Palpatine, one that threw me back Return of the Jedi as if I had just seen it for the first time yesterday.

I think Revenge of the Sith does a fine job of leading into the original trilogy, though certainly not without flaw. Despite the glaring blemish of its predecessors, it comes off to me as entertaining and (mostly) genuine, if a little overloaded. And so I turn to you, the Screened Community: discounting Episode I and II, what's your opinion of this entry in the storied franchise?

I thought that all of them were pretty good.  I agree that Episode 3 was a lot better than the first 2 but I don't think that they could ever meet the fans expectations.

I really enjoyed Episode 3. With all the diplomacy and overall state of boredom in the Galaxy, it was nice to see the George Lucas' love child back in a state of despair.

Don't get me started on Episodes 1 and 2. I'm just glad Episode 3 was better than those two.

I always felt that episode 3 made up for the follies of its two predecessors regardless of how flawed the entire piece was. The entire movie just felt so tragic & foreboding because you just know everything is going to end in tears.

Maybe those movies shouldn't have been made at all. Maybe they should have told a completely different chapter of the Star Wars universe long before the Phantom Menace.

I was looking to include something to this nature in my original post, but it seems that the point slipped my mind. I think that's a perfect way to describe the draw of the film. Anakin as a little boy and Anakin as a Padawan weren't really at all interesting, certainly not enough so as to make up for Christensen's horrific acting. There's something about the impending cataclysm surrounding him as well as the Jedi Order that make Revenge of the Sith both compelling and mildly heartbreaking to witness. With every repeat viewing I can't help but think to myself, "if he'd only done this" or something of that nature. We all know the outcome, and perhaps it's that sense of inevitability that instills so much life into the feature.

I actually really like this movie. The action is great, the PG-13 rating gives it a lot of freedom, it's really dark, and I agree, Ewan did a great job. His Obi-Wan speech while Anakin is burning alive is just spectacular. Really good writing, and a great delivery.

I enjoyed all of the first three trilogy, once you get past the acting, I mean unfortunately even ewan mcgregor was a little cold at times, but I definitely do enjoy those movies...

I liked Sith most out of the prequels.  Unfortunately the sense of fun and adventure is ruined by awkward awkward awkward handling of KEY moments.  I remember sitting in the theater cringing during Anakins big conversion scene.  It's just such weird acting choices.  I couldn't flow with the story emotionally.

I hate it.

For me, Darth Vader was the ultimate villain, and you only begin to feel sorry for him by the end of the original trilogy.

After Episode III, I can't look at Vader the same way again. When you first see Vader at the beginning of A New Hope, he looks so evil. The classic idea of bad guys wearing black hats is on full display. Vader is dressed in all black and even the other bad guys are white. Now, instead of seeing what is supposed to perceived as evil personified, you can't help but think of a whiny emo kid who's all mopey because his girlfriend is gone.

I wish I never saw any of the prequels, but especially Episode III.

I *know* right?!

I wouldn't have minded if all films of the prequel trilogy had been as good as Episode III. They would still be disappointing, since the quality of Revenge of the Sith I is incomparable to any of the episodes of the original trilogy, but they would at least have been good. Which is what Episode III is: good. It may not stand on the level of the other Star Wars films, but at least it succeeds as a Summer blockbuster, whereas the other two prequel installments where shitty and painful to watch.

I liked the movie: a rare case where the coda of the series surpasses all previous installments.

It makes me laugh at the morals of films where the good guy kills hundreds of people to get to the bad guy then refuses to kill him.  So Obi Wan cuts of Anakin's arm and legs and his torso then catches fire but Obi Wan decides not to kill him.  It's better to let him die in burning agony rather than put him out of his misery?

Two of my room mates watched the prequal trilogy there at the weekend and they said they overall both their opinions of the trilogy (as a whole) improved greatly. Seeing them one after another made them take it all in much easier.

That pretty much summed up my thoughts, after just watching it again.
