But here's the thing....(Sucker Punch Edition)

So I saw Sucker Punch for the second time tonight and I have to say that it is not a good movie. I am not making that argument but I will say that Sucker Punch does something that most films don't, it tries. Does it succeed? Hell no. The poor script, bad pacing, and borderline misogyny does not help any argument that tries to show Sucker Punch in a positive light. But here's the thing this film doesn't deserve any of the critical rape that it's getting right now from the mainstream critics all the way down to users posting on forums.

I feel that this anger towards the film has become infectious across the internet. This is not the worst film in the world it's not damaging anyone. If anything it's actually creating interesting conversations about women in film. Unlike something like Twilight Sucker Punch try's to show strong women in a world controlled by men. Yes the film goes overboard with making anything with a penis evil but if the women in Sucker Punch had Quentin Tarantino writing them they could have become icons.

I'm not saying anyone should change their opinions of the film. What I am saying is that people should try and understand and properly deconstruct films before calling them stinging diarrhea out of a donkey's dick hole. I know a girl that actually loves this movie. Is she wrong? Can she BE wrong? As much as I feel that Twilight is a bad franchise I don't fault people for liking it. I simply feel that they haven't thought the film through to it's logical conclusion. The reaction to Sucker Punch feels like a knee jerk move on many people's parts.

So what am I trying to say here. Peace and earth on the internet really. Rational thinking. Here on Screened I believe that this can be possibility. If something is bad it's bad. If something is trying something at least acknowledge that. I'm not angry nor am I attempting to lecture anyone. I have been guilty of going ape shit on a movie as well and I can't deny anyone else that pleasure. It's good to vent but at least tell people your venting or come up with a clever way to concentrate your angry into something creative.

Well said. I haven't seen Sucker Punch yet myself, but it seems like a lot of people's ire is coming from the difference between their expectations and the actual movie. The marketing made it seem entirely focused on over-the-top action set pieces, when it sounds like it at least attempted to be more heady than that.

I've definitely seen a lot of positive reactions to Sucker Punch locally. The only person I know personally who's disliked Sucker Punch is my younger brother; the other five or six people I know who've seen it rather enjoyed it. It's a really bizarre film, and while I'm certainly not going to argue it's an especially good film, I think parts of it are REALLY cool.

As for the "strong women" thing, I kind of forget the gender of most of the characters in this film after a while. Sure, they're women, but some of the side-women in the film (the one who offers to take Blue's jacket in a later scene, the two women who assist Jon Hamm with the lobotomy) seem almost as evil as the men in the film. Meanwhile, not everything with a penis is evil, as the cops who appear IN the asylum, Jon Hamm, and Scott Glenn are certainly not evil. I more notice the sense of "individual strength," as Snyder's never exactly been a feminist.

There's definitely interesting ideas at the center of the film, and the film is also certainly entertaining through a lot of its sequences, so I don't understand why there's all this hatred. Maybe it is the marketing as @pat4327 indicated, but I definitely think it's just out of a desire to kick a film while it's down, as people who haven't even seen the film seem just as eager to take it down a notch.

I'm always of the opinion that any individual can like any film they want -- even if that film is critically panned.

I disliked Sucker Punch. So much so that I came out of film review retirement for it.

I agree with this exactly. Reviews and posts on the internet are just one person voicing their opinion either way. Dudes can hate Citizen Kane, and love Sucker Punch. That's one of the great benefits of having a functioning mind that can formulate opinions.

I think the hatred seen on the internet for Sucker Punch is a result of that being the audience that was most anticipating it. As we all know internet group think is a powerful beast and when it gets rolling its a thing to behold. Personally I thought the film was nonsensical, devoid of tension, sexist, and downright boring for long stretches. Zach Snyder should not be allowed to write anything ever again.

Critical rape...lol

Do you think the internet has caught on to the criticism because Zach Snyder is more of a "nerd" director, especially with the new Superman movie coming up qucikly?

Or perhaps is it that the internet is just filled with people ready to pounce on anything?

@finaldasa: No I think they don't like Snyder because of his style. There are a lot of film snobs out there that consider films like Sky Captain, Sin City, and 300 not to be real movies. Right now people seem to be judging Snyder and not Superman. Too me it feels like everyone has just accepted the fact that a Superman film is going to be made and so they just complain about the director.

I am just tired of this category of people that think the films they go and see owe them something. It's very selfish.

Bit of both I'd imagine.

@ScanCase: Its strange because from my perspective I love the different style and different level of energy Snyder brings to the movies he directs. Perhaps every one who watches his films have boiled him down to quickly to a series of slow motion shots and a "comic book" style. I find it ironic that so many people call for innovation, change, and something fresh coming out of Hollywood and when we get it (whether good or bad) we instantly devour it and slam it for being different.

Sucker Punch wasn't bad, but neither was it great.  It was simply a movie filled with a barely there plot all set up to show some attractive young women in sexy attire while battling characters and creatures culled from video games, fantasy novels, and science fiction.  Not the bottom of the barrel as some might try to portray.

I didn't have enough vested in the movie emotionally by any stretch of the imagination.

What will Sucker Punch offer?

Let me tell you the obvious.  Sucker Punch now has offered strippers, and female Cosplayers some choice outfits to wear for awhile, if one is daring enough.   Perhaps it will engender a video game if one doesn't already exist.

A quick cash cow for Snyder to milk but alas, I willingly gave him my money so I could suckle on its teat.
