PG-13...alright

Zack Snyder has kind of established himself as a fan of ridiculous, over-the-top violence to the point where he found a way to cram it into places it didn't really belong (SEE most of the fight scenes in Watchmen). Now he is on the verge of releasing an original story that has no built-in fan-base to offend and its PG-13. I don't know, this really bothers me. I love me some slow-motion blood and gore, just don't want it in an adaptation of a revered graphic novel involving generally non-violent characters (referring to Nite Owl and Silk Spectre). This movie was the perfect opportunity for Snyder to get all that stuff out there and apparently he didn't. That's all.

Your thoughts on the rating? Are you more or less interested in this film given its rating?

Watchmen was gritty as fuck, and I liked it because of that, so I don't know. I hope it's good but it looks silly so far.

After the poor reception of The Watchmen and "that fucking owl movie", I guess the studio (and maybe him, too) wants the movie to make some money before it withers away.  The film looks like an orgy of junior high school hormones run amuck (wonderfully so) and excluding all those 14 year old boys who want to see cute girls in sailor suits fight dragons from the film seems like an unprofitable mistake.  Alice in Wonderland (2010) made more than 300 and Watchmen combined domestically (more than all of Snyder's films if you expand globally) and it was rated "PG".  There are similarities between the properties so perhaps it isn't necessary to toss in a lot of graphic violence just for visual excess.  I personally don't expect the film to do well because it's (a) a new property and (b) a confused marketing mess, but a "PG-13" rated movie has a better chance of earning back its production costs than an "R" would.

@PenguinDust: At least That Fucking Owl Movie had reason to do terrible, there's no reason that movie should exist at all.

I still have zero interest in Sucker Punch.  Visually, I'm sure it'll be fine, and I've been known to enjoy some bad movies solely because of the big explodey parts (G.I. Joe, I'm looking at you).  I just don't see anything in there that makes me care about seeing it.

There was plenty of reason for it to exist...but not in the way that it was made.  Zack Snyder was probably the worst choice to go with on that, the voice cast was pretty terrible, the slo-mo was unnecessary, and the use of "Kings and Queens" by 30 Seconds to Mars really drove me away from caring about it as well.  However, the books are pretty good for what they are, and it could've easily been made into something cooler.  Unfortunately, that studio (the guys that made Happy Feet) have a hard-on for making these realistic-looking CG movies with directors that are a bit more hard-edged than they should be aiming for.  I mean, for fuck's sake, the man who directed Mad Max made Happy Feet!!!  While I enjoyed that movie, the point still remains that you just don't want to go that route so often, as it can lead to some horrendous results...both in the form of the movie it made as well as the future of that person's career.

Yeah, the violence in Watchmen was fucking weird. If you had read the comic.  Anyway.

Sucker Punch sounds so ridiculously exploitation-y awesome, that if it isn't and takes itself too seriously (hey, that's a trend too with Snyder films!), I might heave a little.

This seems like a case where the studio probably told him the only way he could make it was if it were PG-13. Just look at the ultimatum Guillermo del Toro recently got about the Mountains of Madness. I enjoy blood and gore in slow mo as much as the next guy but from the looks of things they're mostly fighting robots, giant samauri statues with mini-guns, and WWI German monster things. So, they can get away with dismembering them a lot more than you could actual people. Fantasy violence and all that.

I'm personally on the fence about both this and Battle: LA. They are either going to amazing or terrible.

I for sure thought when I saw the trailer for this movie it would be rated R but it's not. As I've read the watchmen comic several times the movie is the best possible adaptation of it possible so if you've read and liked than you should have no reason to not like the movie. As for Zack Snyder's Owl movie, haven't seen it and don't plan it but I might see Sucker Punch.

@crimsonavenger: While I didn't hate Watchmen, I could hardly call it one of my favorites that I'll watch again and again.  You can't say people who love the comic have no excuse not to like the film, thats just a dumb statement.  The story of Watchmen is much better in novel form.  It is a complex story that you can really only take in bits at a time, at your own pace, to be able to enjoy it fully.  Like I said I didn't dislike the movie, it was the best possible adaptation achievable.  But cramming all of the Watchmen fiction into two hours and 40 minutes (not including the 3 hour directors cut) of film is a bit exhausting, especially for people who weren't familiar with the novel.   I love looking at the detail in each frame and noticing little things.  In film it goes by much quicker and those who don't know the story had to pay real close attention to everything to even get the slightest of what was happening.  I compare seeing the Watchmen film adaptation to the Harry Potter film adaptations.  I enjoy watching them to see a moving and visual experience of the novels, but the books will always be the one I go to time and time again to get the full experience of the fiction.   Some things will work great as film, while others should be left on the page, Watchmen is definately the latter.

I think Sucker Punch will be awesome even with a pg13 rating. at least it puts the man on some sort of leash, so he won't bother going TOO far... but maybe that's what we want from him in the first place.

whatever, still looks awesome

As bad as this movie was, it could have gained a ton of charm by simply being gory and some rated R fun. Whether you liked Kill Bill or not, there was something to appreciate in the fights and sequences. Instead with Sucker Punch, you get characters screaming "You Mother!" shootings that always happen off-screen, and its chalk full of babes yet absolutely no sex appeal.

Why does it matter if it's PG-13 or R? Both ratings contain lots of same thing. Only difference is R often has a lot more profanity.

PG-13 rated movies always seem like castrated R rated movies.

I am completely uninterested regardless of the film's rating.
