Who here wants to help me list all the stolen ideas in this movie

So after watching the wreck of SP, and wasting 15 bucks on an over hyped movie, I'm sitting in the theater looking at Snyder's newest creation. I start to notice strange similarities between scenes in other films.
 Take for example:
The various bullet scenes, ominous of Wanted?
The dangerous cargo aboard a runaway train headed towards a city, how about Unstoppable!
The entire castle scene-at this point, I was almost expecting a giant Balrog to show up and snatch Baby Doll into the depths.

I'll give you Wanted (further down the rabbit hole is Matrix, and even further would be Hong Kong cinema,) , but SP's production wrapped up somewhere last year, before Unstoppable came out. The concept of OMG DANGEROUS THING COMING AT CITY isn't all of an original one.

Running on walls = The Matrix
Dream within a dream = Paprika
Putting a team together for a heist = Ocean's Eleven
Gay for Tom Hardy = Bronson
Bombastic, horn heavy score = Shutter Island
etc.

This seems like it will start out as "ha cuz sucker punch is a bad movie" and then will turn into lengthy diatribes about how no movie is original anymore.

Also agreed because it's true. To make lists like this to simply bash the movie for being bad seems juvenile. If a movie is bad, sure present your examples why but there is no reason to smash its face in the shit and call it a bad dog.

Sorry it was a heat of the moment thing. Just not very typical of a movie to be that bad up front. Won't happen again.

As far as stolen ideas go, I'd say this movie primarily cribs from Terry Gilliam's Brazil. The escaping into fantasy sequences, the robot samurai, the lobotomy happy ending - it's all there.

@HandsomeDead: Uh, why do you seem to hijack so many threads with your disdain for Inception? We get it now.

@Joe: Because there's no such thing as an original concept and here's it's being used as a symbol of objective lack in quality but no one seemed to beat that dead horse with one of the most collaged works in recent memory

I've been saying Brazil also, of which I need to see again, its been awhile; I'm curious if Brazil references it self.

Once Upon a time is one of my favorite films, it is also mostly a dream sequence. But what I love about OUaTiA is that there is a reason for it being a dream sequence. When I finished the movie I had to think about it for a bit, but once it clicked why it was a dream sequence, I loved the film.

Another film with a purposeful Dream Sequence is Where the Wild Things Are, of which I also liked a lot.

So with Sucker Punch, what is the reason for it being a dream sequence? After a second viewing I feel pretty good about it. I look forward to seeing the directors cut.

Also the Bullet Falling thing: the first time I seen that was in Ghost In the Shell, it may predate that, but the Matrix is highly inspired by that film.

gimme a break.  these scenes arent stolen from something: these are just basic things you see in movies.

In the Matrix commentary it talks about the first movie to have characters wear sunglasses in the dark; stolen!!!!

The Helghast from Killzone 3, the Orcs from LotR, the robots from iRobot? What about those.

Nothing is original. Directors should feel free to take ideas from whatever inspires them, and shape it into whatever suits their film. If he steals from many films, that means he has watched many films, a good thing for any director. As  Jean-Luc Godard said: "It's not where you take things from - it's where you take them to."

That said, I think this movie is a pile of shit.

THIS. Except for the last part. I actually really enjoyed SP.

Action movies don't need to be original to be good. They need to be good, to be good. A lead with charisma, a villain you hate, good action scenes. Its not rocket science. This movie being a composite of pre-existing ideas, bordering the line between plagiarism and homage, is the least of its problems. Tarentino movies lift entire scenes from other films, but he makes good films. Its in the execution.

I could not agree more.

Here is the brand spanking new trailer for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. This might be Scott Glenn's best turn as a World War I general/spiritual guru since Backdraft.
