Do you ever think that at least one of these viral campaigns is going to be like the plot of Halloween III? I mean, we all jump through their hoops and then BAM! face full of insects.

OK, certain parts of that headline are not, strictly speaking, accurate. Still, the viral campaign for J.J. Abrams' 2011 monster mash Super 8  has entered its next, bizarre phase as I Watch Stuff demonstrates with a new mock ad/letter mailed out to a German movie blogger. So far I haven't found anybody who's deciphered the ad's true contents, but it's only a matter of time before we find out what bizarre shenanigans the film's crack marketing team of frizzy-haired lunatics who've been up for five days straight are trying to pull.

On its surface the ad looks like a harmless letter asking kids to join the "Rocket Poppeteer Astronaut Program" and then presenting the simple challenge of counting all the stars on the page. Abrams seems to have a thing for frozen treats when it comes to these viral ads. You may recall the campaign for Cloverfield  included some rather surreal messages from the Slusho! company. Will the company once again be involved in the raising of some hideous leviathan from the depths? I don't care, I just want my free goddamn popsicle!

Check out the viral ad below. With enough eyes maybe we can be the first to crack this thing.

I loved the viral campaign for Cloverfield, and how they did a great job of tying it into the actual film (especially towards the very end). I'll definitely look into this.

I'm thinking this gives us the name of possibly the main character.  Kid who's really into "spaceman" stuff gets to play for real when an alien attacks his town?  Could be cool.

17... I count 17 stars. Mua-ah-ah.

@MostlyHeadless: Actually, there is more than 17. The American flag on the astronaut has stars on it.  I'm not about to try and count all those though. Someone else will surely do it, provided it's even clear enough to do so.

@Mechanical_Ape: Well, there should be fifty stars then as they should correspond to the 50 states, right? So that would make the total 67?

Good eye btw.

@MostlyHeadless:  If the film's set in the late 50's like I'm thinkin', the flag could have 48 or 49.

Arg!  Why am I even thinking about this?!?  Well done JJ, you brilliant bastard.

How many licks will it take to get to the center of this mystery?

Did anyone else see the crazy ice cream truck at Comic-Con handing out shirts and stuff behind the Gaslamp Hilton that was dressed up like that? I knew it was Super 8 related, I wish I got video of it. I heard it for hours on Saturday.

It had some really awesome Fallout-style Retro-Future space race propaganda. Whoever the marketing team was behind that, bravo.
Super 8 Theatrical Trailer

We hate to be those guys who get super duper giddy over a movie trailer, but as children of the Spielberg era, we've little choice in the matter. This just looks awesome.
