Something Concerning the Ending (Spoilers)

Saw the film about two weeks ago, really enjoyed it. But there's been something bothering me about the ending that's remained in the back of my head ever since I saw it. Maybe they explained it and I just missed it, in which case bad on me, but - what the hell happened to the fire that was going to destroy the town?
