Looking forward to Super 8? Well, you might not have to look forward for much longer, as Paramount and Twitter have announced a bit of a team-up, intended to hype up their plan to release the movie a day early in 300 theaters nationwide. It's a bit silly, really: there's some nonsense about a Twitter hashtag called #super8secret, but...you don't actually need to tweet anything to anyone to get in on the deal. All you need to do is go to the Super 8 website, click on one of the buttons that lead to e-ticketing sites, and go ahead and buy a ticket. Or, as far as I can tell, you can go to a participating theater and buy a ticket tomorrow.
So, yeah...it's a bit silly of a promotion, effectively a way to scream "HEY YOU GUYS KNOW THIS TWITTER THING?" without actually doing anything intriguing with the service. That said, it's still an opportunity for Paramount to release the film and get buzz going on the net among their core audience without giving critics a chance to set the tone for how the film is going to be received, but also without doing something crass like not have any critics' screenings. Not that they seem worried about the film; reviews are pretty good thus far, and there's a pretty massive sneak preview tonight here in San Francisco at the Castro Theater, the city's biggest single-screen venue. I'll be in attendance, and we should have a review for the film up sometime early tomorrow.
Plan on checking out Super 8 this weekend? If so, are you interested in one of these "sneak previews?"
