Did anyone involved explain the cellophane "S"?

I recently received the Superman Box set and have enjoyed watching the Christopher Reeve movies. But like everyone I have wondered what the producers were thinking with all the strange powers being used in the movie. More to the point what the F was up with the cellophane S. I figure by now someone in the production of the movie has said something, and I got to know. I figure this is place to ask.

I may be wrong here, but I think the studio did not like Donner's original cut, so they brought some people on to "fix" it. I think the S was part of that. As for why it is there: I have no fucking idea. The effect was bad, but the mere concept is what kills me. I guess they wanted Superman to not kill anyone, but still prevent an attack?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to have Superman just use his Ice Breath to mildly inconvenience Zod ?
