Overview

Superman/Batman:Apacalypse is the sequel to Superman/Batman:Public Enemies. Like the previouse film this one is based on The Supergirl from Krypton storyline in the Superman/Batman comic.

It is a action adventure film as Batman and Superman have to deal with the appearance of Supermans cousin Kara as well as Apacalypse who is searching for a new captain to his honor guard.

Creation

Due to the sucsess of the previouse Superman/Batman film Warner Brothers Animation went with a direct sequel a first for their new home video line.Bruce Timm returned as the lead produce for the film further entrenching himself in the DC Animated Universe.Lauren Montgomery directed the film she had previously directed Justice League:Crisis of Two Earths. Tab Murphy was hired to adapt the Supergirl from Krypton storyline originally written by Jeph Loeb.

Plot Summary

Former President Lex Luthors impeachment trial is begging after Superman gave his deposition to the court. Gotham City is testing out new unmanned arial drones as a means of better policing. Earth is continuing to witness meteor showers after Batman destroyed a much larger meteor a few weeks earlier. A larger meteor falls into Gotham Harbor creating a tidal wave flooding the surronding area. Batman begins to investigate the area underwater and comes across a kryptonian spaceship that is empty. On the surface a mysterious girl falls into Batmans ship crashing it into the dock destoying it. Deranged she wonders around the city coming across several men who she attacks and aquires a large coat. She continues to travel through the city but her powers begin to activate destroying various buildings and harming people. Batman finds her alone and knocks her out with a piece of Kryptonite he found. While doing medical tests on her she wakes up and fries his computer she attempts to escape but Superman interveins explaining to Batman that she is Kara Zor-El his cousin.

On Apokolips a warrior slays her foe and continues on her path to becoming Apokolips new honor guard captain of the Female Furies.Her final test is to defeat the Furies and become their new master. Out numbered they use speed and numbers to slowly overwhelm the combatant and kill her. Unimpressed Darkseid warns Granny Goodness to find him a worthy captain or she will face his wrath. A blonde girl see a vision of the future of another blonde girl int he water being picked up by Superman wrapped in his cloak.

Batman and Superman take Kara to the fortress of solitude to protect her from ehrself as well as her from the world. Batman dosen't trust her though pointing at the time of her arival and memory loss. Superman dosen't want to hear it though wanting to belive that she is his cousin and his family. Clark begins to teach Kara how to be a earth girl.this includes showing her shopping as well as food such as hotdogs. After a long day they come across a massive statue of Clarks other identity Superman and she realizes how the people around him see him. She dosen't want that. They are ambushed though by Wonder Woman and her Amazonian warriors. Wonder Woman captured Kara and forces Superman to let her be taken to Themyscira so that they can teach her to use her powers.

While visiting her Superman is less than happy at what Wonder Woman and Batman have done to Kara. At Themyscira Kara has been taught combat skill and other skills. Superman dosen't approve at them hiding her from the world. This displeasure is short lived as a portal opens revealing Doomsday soon followed by a horde of other Doomsday sent by Darkseid. Wonder Woman calls her armies and they all do battle with the massive clone army. During the battle Batman begins to realize this is nothing but a distraction and runs off to Kara. Wonder Woman and her women hold off the monsters but are being pushed back. Seeing the need to end this quickly Superman uses his heat vision to vaporize all the clones until nothing is left. After the battle they discover a girl laying in the water thinking it is Kara Clark wraps her in his cloack but it is Lyla Karas friend.Darkseid has captured Kara intent on making her his new captain.

Realizing the need for back up Superman and Wonder Woman go to Bardas house, Barda was the former honor guard captain to Darkseid. She at first against going to Apokolips thinking it a suicide mission but relents and journeys with them to Apokolips. One on Apokolips the foursome split up all on their seperat missions. Superman takes to the air looking for Darkseids thrown room wanting him to give Kara back with out any battle. Once their Kara reveals to be working for Darkseidand attacks her cousin throwing him through the room and into the fires of Apokolips. Seeing that he has lost his cousin Superman fights back and defeats her. Wonder Woman and Barda go through the sewers looking for Kara but are ambushed by Granny Goodness and the Furies. The Furies gain the upper hand at first but the pair are able to defeat the Furies and capture Granny.Batman takes to the air and begins looking for the Hell Spores massive bombs. All of them converge on Darkseids palace Batman threatans to blow up the entierity of Apokolips killing them all if he dosen't give up his claim on Kara. At first Darkseid belives this to be a bluff but after having the old password revealed he is impressed by Batmans willingness to kill and destory to get what he wants. He forgoes any claim to Kara and they all depart.

Back on earth Superman takes Kara to Smallville hoping to give her a quiet place for her to grow up and discover her self. They are ambushed though by Darkseid who only gave up his claim to contolling Kara not killing her. He throws Superman into space and dose battle with Kara firing multiple Omega Rays at her. Together they battle all over the farmland of Smallville with Kara being stopped, blasted into the ground by Darkseids rays. A Rejuvinated Superman blast back to earth and unleashes his furry upon Darkseid thinking he has killed Kara. Darkseid is thrown through his portal but the direction was changed and he is sent into space to float untill he is found.After the arrival of the Kents Kara realizes that she wants to be like her cousin and protect the earth.

Kara Zor-El is reintroduced the people of Themyscira and Batman as Super Girl.

Production was handled by Warner Bros Animation led by Bruce Tim and Lauren Montgomery.

Critical Reception

Apocolypse recived mixed if not negative reviews.

IGN gave the it 7 out of 10 saying "Despite a misleading title, this coming-of-age tale is well told"

Batman on Film gave the film a D the lowest of their animated film reviews.

Jeffrey M. Anderson from Common Sense Media gave the film a negative review calling the Darkseid subplot "extraneous; it's just an excuse to add some fighting to what should be a coming-of-age story."

Felix Vasquez Jr.from Cinema Crazed did not like the action scenes and focus on Supergirl instead of the titutalr heroes calling it "Nothing more than a series of action scenes used to undermine the male fan base and title characters Batman and Superman..."

James O'Ehley from Sci Fi Movie page did not like the art style or the inclusion of krypto the superdog wondering if "Superman appears to wearing eyeliner and what the heck is the deal with Krypto the superdog! Come on! What are we? Six years old or something"
