" "The directorial debut of the landscaper-cum-storyboard-artist"  ???????????? "
Are you 14? "
Are you capable of having a sense of humor? Are you aware that some people do, in fact, not have knowledge of the Latin language. "
I think the implication is that only 14 year olds would find it funny; semen jokes don't cut it for myself personally. "
Only 14 year olds? So that "hair gel" scene from There's Something About Mary wasn't iconic or memorable to anyone else over 14? Also, I'm not fourteen. "
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, I don't quite find myself representative of the entire >14 year old demographic. I wasn't aware things only came into an iconic or memorable state lest it be humorous, but I digress.

Something went horribly wrong with the whole "passing the torch" thing...
I can not imagine the pressure on Goro Miyazaki!

This movie sure took a long time coming to the US. Here in europe it was at the cinema years ago.
I agree with the review, fortunately studio Gibli has since redeemed themselves with the much, much better Ponyo on the cliff by the sea.

A rookie director taking on a movie project that combines the content of four novels is never a guaranteed success, but it's disappointing to hear the way that the film turned out.  If Goro Miyazaki gives directing another go, I hope he's able to learn from his mistakes.

Saw it at an animation festival two years ago. Everyone was psyched, most people left early without reservation because they had  to catch a train. The credits may say Ghibli, but the film smacks of a vanity project gone indulgent.

"...plodding, uninteresting animated blob"

So you mean it's an ordinary Anime movie then?

@Matt:  Well,  A lot of people would disagree with the fact that all their movies were successful in those 25 years. As you might have read in these comments alone, there are haters for almost every movie of theirs.
I'm not disagreeing with the review by the way. Just the assertion that they have "lost their touch". It's too early to say that based on one (or two) movies.

That sucks.

That sucks. Still, his dad has some excellent movies.

It sounds boring and that's not what I want out of anime.  This looks like a sign that this legacy of filmmakers is dwindling away.  I recently watched Castle of Cogliostro and that animation style holds up remarkably well.  I guess the only thing left to sell this movie is the Miyazaki name.  Keep doing reviews!

which earthsea book is the movie based on?  I read the first two and none of the stuff the review describes happens therein.

@littledreamer: I've read two things on that matter: that it takes elements from all four books, but especially the last two, and that it just takes elements from the last two. Having not read the books either I can't say which is accurate.

Apparently Miyazaki didn't want his son to direct this, though he didn't have enough experience yet or something. Seems like they should have listened to him.

Definitely the worst Ghibli film I have seen but it isn't BAD, 3 stars I'd say - wonderfully animated and has a great mythology to it, just most of everything else is rather trite. And this film came out a while ago
