TARDISes (also known as a TT capsule) are living/organic machines that are capable of traveling trough time and space. These machines were created by the Timelords of Gallifrey. They are bigger on the inside. After the last great time war, all but one were destroyed.

The TARDIS was co-created by the Time Lord Scientist, Omega. He was part of the Pythia on Gallifrey along with Rassilon and the Other. TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space.  The exterior of a TARDIS is actually a gateway to another dimension where the interior of a TARDIS is located, hence the term "Relative Dimensions". The exterior of a TARDIS is what really exists at the location of arrival or departure.  The exterior of a TARDIS is capable of changing its appearance the second that it lands, so it will fit in, whatever time period it lands in, this feature is called a chameleon circuit. It was originally designed to have 6 pilots. There are many different types of TARDISes, including Battle TARDISes that are heavily armored and armed with time torpedoes. The only remaining TARDIS in the universe is the Doctor's, which is a Type 40 TARDIS.

A TARDIS is not only capable of changing it's external appearance but also its interior, described by the fifth doctor as changing its desktop theme. They are also capable of rearranging their internal rooms, and their internal size is estimated to be bigger then the Earth. TARDISes possess many feature which make them extremely useful for time travel, such as a psychic link to the crew that can translate any language, or writing inside their head. A TARDIS possesses powerful sensors, and is capable of expanding its atmosphere beyond the inside creating a shell around the outside of the TARDIS allowing crew to step outside the TARDIS and survive, even in space. TARDISes can become invisible, and can travel silently. TARDISes are said to be grown, rather then built, and are essentially alive.
