Months before the release of The Amazing Spider-man, one of its writer--James Vanderbilt--was hired to write a sequel, though Sony planned only to make this script into a movie if the first film was a hit. Shortly before the release of The Amazing Spider-man, Sony contracted Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to do rewrites, though they still did not guarantee the sequel would happen. However, less than two days after the release of The Amazing Spider-man, its spectacular profits and great word-of-mouth convinced Sony to announce on Facebook that the sequel would happen, as well as at least one more entry after that. Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach, who had produced The Amazing Spider-man and selected Marc Webb to be its director, swiftly began doing interviews promoting the series and promising to be just as involved in the sequel.
