Heat Vision today broke news that Denis Leary is in talks to join the cast of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. The film series ostensibly needed rebooting to make it fresher, so sure, why not cast the cranky Irishman best known for his No Cure For Cancer comedy album, and second best known for reportedly ripping off that album's material from Bill Hicks. But since then, Leary has made a career out of acting, and I suppose he can give this teen-skewing new Spider-Man some edge? Sure, why not.

Leary will be playing police captain George Stacy, father to Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. In the comic, George had frequent run-ins with Spidey (to be played by Andrew Garfield) and eventually died in a accident resulting from a battle between the titular hero and Doctor Octopus.

Directed by Marc Webb and written by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent, the new Spider-Man is becoming one of the more hotly buzzed-about properties in development now. Leary was last seen in the fantastic HBO film Recount, about the 2000 Presidential Election fiasco in Florida.

Dennis Leary is Irish? I did not know that. I really want to know how this will turn out because it still feels weird that they are just making these films again so soon.

Couldn't care less about the Spiderman reboot, you could cast Macho man randy Savage and I still wouldn't care...wait yeah I would.

Dennis Leary needs to ease down.

I'll admit it: the cast for this reboot is starting to interest me. As much as I want another Tobey Maguire movie, I'll keep an open mind.

Why does Denis Leary have a career?

Because there's no cure for cancer. /old joke = eternal truth

Last seen in Recount? What about Rescue Me?

does he play the green goblins less known and less cool brother?

I think this could be a great shot to do what reboots should: erase the mistakes of the past. Spider-Man 2 was great and all, but this sounds like it's going to be vastly superior to Sam Raimi's first entry.

I can't say I'm interested in the reboot as much as I'm interested in the casting announcements.

Spider-Man doesn't have a villain named "The Plagiarist" does he?

Sure, why not?

I gotta agree.  With all the other Marvel projects circling the entertainment-infosphere, I just can't get excited about another Spiderman movie, but the thought process behind creating a new superhero film franchise is fascinating.

That's pretty good casting that is.

I think Leary can pull off being a cop.  He was great as a Firefighter on Rescue Me.  I'm really satisfied with the casting of this Spiderman Reboot.  I just wish they chose a different villain than the Lizard.

Boy, the Hating on Leary ship isn't ever going to sail, is it?

It isn't official, though, is it?

I didn't know Leary ripped any material off from anyone.  Was all the material he used completely swiped?

I am very curious now.  Had no idea.

I have SO MUCH hatred for the previous Spiderman movies. I hope this reboot has less cheese stink.

@circle: What was wrong with the first series? Ya know, besides the entire 3rd movie, lol.
