I always think it’s a little funny how there’s always a race of rumors whenever the leads of superhero movies are getting cast - - names are thrown out and speculated on, and on, and on - - and then the supporting players fill out quietly and without a lot of hullaballoo. Such is the case with the Spider-Man reboot, as THR reports that Martin Sheen’s in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben and Sally Field’s in early talks to be Aunt May.
Perhaps it shows how “in too deep” am I with these funny books, but I think these two are somewhat unorthodox choices. Sheen’s typically been more stately or more of a pit bull than what I’ve picture Ben to be and Field's younger than we've really ever seen May. I don’t object to that, of course - - it just shows the Webb and crew are trying something a little different,.
Not to jump to any conclusions (as is comic fans’ wont,) as I’m sure this is probably just going to be some fodder for flashbacks, but I’m hoping that Uncle Ben's inclusion here doesn’t mean they’re actually going to go retell the origin again in anything beyond 10 minute opener. It’s an iconic story, sure, but we literally just saw it . This would be like a remake made within ten years of the original.
