"Wait a minute... who's replacing us, again?"

I always think it’s a little funny how there’s always a race of rumors whenever the leads of superhero movies are getting cast - - names are thrown out and speculated on, and on, and on - - and then the supporting players fill out quietly and without a lot of hullaballoo. Such is the case with the Spider-Man reboot, as THR reports that Martin Sheen’s in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben and Sally Field’s in early talks to be Aunt May.

Perhaps it shows how “in too deep” am I with these funny books, but I think these two are somewhat unorthodox choices. Sheen’s typically been more stately or more of a pit bull than what I’ve picture Ben to be and Field's younger than we've really ever seen May. I don’t object to that, of course - -  it just shows the Webb and crew are trying something a little different,.

Not to jump to any conclusions (as is comic fans’ wont,) as I’m sure this is probably just going to be some fodder for flashbacks, but I’m hoping that Uncle Ben's inclusion here doesn’t mean they’re actually going to go retell the origin again in anything beyond 10 minute opener.  It’s an iconic story, sure, but we literally just saw it . This would be like a remake made within ten years of the original.

Couldn't be less excited for this at all.

I think Sam Raimi should have had another shot and just cast Jake Gyllenhaal and someone else as Mary Jane and just kept going.

Sure Spider-Man 3 sucked since it was so bloated and too campy in spots, but man do I still like the world Raimi made. Really felt like the comic...besides Malkovich as Vulture? PERFECT.

But nope...they're taking Parker back to high school...

Which is weird since I don't see Spider-Man as the high school superhero at all. Struggling college kid in the real world with no one holding his hand? Yeah, that sounds like the spidey I like.

This one is going to be based on the Ultimate Spider-Man run (and is a total reboot, so "Spider-Man 4" isn't really accurate...) in which Aunt May and Uncle Ben are, well, kinda hippies. Ex-hippies anyway. Definitely ultra-liberal. Thus, a different approach to casting these two is totally appropriate.

I completely agree, but I must admit the addition of Martin Sheen raises my level of interest a little bit.
