From Collider:

“It’s not just the best Marvel movie to date (although it is that), and it’s not just in the very top tier of superhero movies (although it is), but it’s one of the most all-around satisfying summer blockbusters since God-knows-when.” -Oliver Lyttleton, The Playlist

“As written and directed by the ever genre-savvy Whedon, it’s a clean-burning, six-cylinder entertainment that exudes discipline in every particular, from the script’s balance of sincerity and self-effacing humor to the well-integrated visual effects to the keen sense of proportion that governs the ensemble. Whenever the possibility of boredom or excess rears its head, Whedon finds an elegant solution.” --Justin Chang, Variety

“As creatively variable and predictably formulaic as the Marvel films have been, this one will not only make the core geek audience feel like it’s died and gone to Asgard but has so much going for it that many non-fans will be disarmed and charmed. This is effects-driven, mass appeal summer fare par excellence, that sought-after rare bird that hits all the quadrants, as marketing mavens like to say.” --Todd McCarthy, THR

“Iron Man and Captain America probably get the most screen time (or at least the most focus). And while Whedon and the funny and clever Tony Stark seem made for each other, I was very impressed how he handled Captain America, who is a far more straightforward and unwaveringly noble fellow than Whedon – who prefers his characters to be a bit more ambiguous and flawed — is known for, but one he handles very well, as Cap takes on the leadership role he was destined for.” --Eric Goldman, IGN

“It is not often you can say this, but The Avengers is one $200 million-plus event flick where not a single cent has been wasted. The special-effects work is spectacular, especially during two truly awesome set-piece battle sequences.” --Leigh Paatsch, The Daily Mail

There are a few complaints, but mostly it is very positive. Of course the distributors are making sure there advance screenings have people inclined to like this movie, but this is definitely a good sign.

I'm glad all of the trailers shown so far have been making it look pretty good and I enjoyed all of the previous films so you could say I'm now pretty hyped for this

Consider me hype for this one. I also think it's a great idea to shift the focus to Iron Man & Cap America, as for characters, they have the most going for them.

Pretty surprised. These seem really positive.

Go on Rotten Tomatoes, there's one negative review by a critic who's a DC fangirl (that is the correct term right?). I'm not surprised that this film has gotten such good reviews so far. I'm most surprised at how Mark Ruffalo is apparently the stand out in the film. I totally would not have expected him to be.

It's a good start but odd that only glowing positive reviews are coming out when the supposed embargo wasn't up until May 2nd, here in the States anyways. I wonder if they let these out early for more press.

Either way makes me feel better about seeing this in theaters opening weekend.

Could we expect a solo Hulk movie in the future? Third times the charm, right?

they are great characters, but I would say Hulk is the most interesting. Most comic books written about him too.

yeah I think it's cool everyone thinks he is the best part. he was a surprising choice for the role.

yeah. especially after Joss Whedon didn't seem to happy about the finished product, I got nervous. But it looks like it will be awesome.

i wonder if they will ban those critics from future screenings like they did for that guy who made a GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO review early.

I am shocked they aren't working on one. For all means, make Thor movies too, but Hulk is definitely the more bankable and interesting character. The first two HULK movies both did well, and that was before there was a huge AVENGERS craze.

@Dylabaloo:

Actually according to Kevin Feige in an interview he did with the Huffington Post there are no plans for a new Hulk film. Both The Incredible Hulk and Ang Lee's Hulk were relatively disappointing financially in comparison to the other Marvel films but there is a Hulk TV Show in development for ABC.

i know that is true but it annoys me. The Hulk movies weren't flops and they came out before the AVENGERS was a huge brand. I think if a Hulk film came out now it would be able to out-gross THOR.

You ever notice reviews for films that are several weeks from releasing are almost always positive?   Just like with video games.

What a relief. I was afraid this was going to turn out into Iron Man 2. Not that Iron Man 2 was a bad man; it was decent. I just didn't like how the first 30 minutes were about how smug Robert Downey Jr. could be. That does get tiresome after awhile.

Usually good movies allow critics to review their movies ahead of time because they know the won't get an overwhelming amount of negative criticism. With that in mind, early reviews promote their movies even further.

This is very encouraging to hear! Especially the positive words about Mark Ruffalo, that was the only thing I ever had concerns with.

I am surprised, and pleased, that they were able to pull this one off.

I'm very pleased to hear this. I've repeated said that the Avengers is my second most anticipated movie of the summer behind Disney/Pixar's Brave. The reason I am so intrigued by this movie is because it's doing something I've never seen in film before. Taking individual protagonists from other movies and combine them into one feature film. While, yes there have been parody ensemble movies before with iconic characters, 1976's Murder by Death for instance, and after-the-fact monster movies, no one has purposely released a series of character movies with the intent of combining them for a later feature. I am excited to see if they can pull it all together and how well it will be received by the general public. If it does well, I hope that other franchises might get a turn at this format. My choice would be the DC-Vertigo line with movies featuring The Sandman, a new Hellblazer (this time British), Death: The High Cost of Living, Books of Magic (although it is close to Harry Potter even though it came out before Potter) and maybe Black Orchid. Or, come to think of it, Zantanna, Dr. Fate, The Specter or other DC mystical characters could be tossed into the mix, too. Not each character would get there own film over the course of the lead-in features, but the culmination would include all of them in some capacity.

yeah it is because the distributor first invites the critics who, based on their previous reviews, are most likely to like the movie. Still, I think it is a good sign.

Funny. Iron Man 2 is my favorite Avengers lead-up film by far.

the only thing that ever concerned you, eh? you seem very confidant in Marvel Studio's abilities.

never mind. it turns out I misread his quote. I don't think he ever criticized it after all. thanks for catching that one. :)
