So what happens now?

Now that The Avengers is out and is doing pretty well, it means we will definitely be seeing more of Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and now possibly even Black Widow. There are already definite sequels for many of the characters, so the questions remains what they will do with this combined universe from here on.

I'm a little scared of what happened when the Avengers stuff got crammed into Iron Man 2 will happen more now that the studio knows the fans will eat it up. As much as I liked the overall feel of the movies, and how they all felt like they were part of the same world, it could start to get a little too much if overdone.

I haven't looked into what is already in development, but what do you guys think Marvel should do? Will they give each character their own next movie and then bring them all together for an Avengers 2? Or maybe even start building up the skeleton for the Civil War storyline (or some other one of the big arcs that aren't too esoteric for mainstream audiences)?

@cmpLtNOOb: Actually, from what I saw (too lazy to find the quote, but it's from one of the creative heads of Marvel Studios) they've decided to dial back the overt cross-movie setups in favor of telling isolated stories, at least for now. I think they understood the criticism leveled against obtrusive SHIELD bits, and now that the universe is more or less established, I think they're ready to carry on with just doing movies. I expect if there's an Avengers 2 setup (based on the stinger, which I won't spoil) it'll be mostly contained within its own setup movie, whoever they decide to use for that.

Not while they don't own the movie rights to the X-men or Spider-Man. ;) The Avengers was/is so crazy successful, that I'm sure they don't need to do anything special to the next one.

Maybe next time they get a Falafel or a Gyro.

I honestly can't see them waiting another 4 to 5 years to make an Avengers sequel. I predict we get Iron Man 3 in 2013, and Thor 2 and Cap 2 in 2014, with The Avengers 2 coming in 2015 at the latest. It would be interesting to see if Disney and Marvel decide to step outside of summer in order to produce more movies before The Avengers 2.

Edit: It seems that Thor 2 has actually already been announced to be released in November of 2013. Sounds like a good idea to me. Now they can release another Hulk, and either introduce a new character in their own film, or produce some sort of Black Widow/Hawkeye collaboration movie.

@Suedehead: With that six-picture deal, one of the inevitable Hulk cameo's should be in Thor 2. The Hulk IN SPAAAAAACE.

@jasonefmonk: SPACE HULK WOULD BE THE BEST!

That's actually a pretty good question. It's a given we'll see a Thor 2, and an Iron Man 3, but the rest of the characters are an unknown. Could we see another Incredible Hulk movie after the switch from Norton to Ruffalo? Could we see another Captain America after the Cap gets frozen in time? Could we maybe see a SHIELD movie focusing only on Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury?

Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are confirmed for 2013. Cap 2 will be released in 2014 and will most likely feature Hawkeye and Black Widow since his story will continue as an agent of SHIELD. There's a second project for 2014 that will be revealed during comic-con and The Avengers 2 for 2015 is all but confirmed.

I hope as they further explore SHIELD, they finally get deeper into Fury's backstory and motivations.

@Black_Rose: Thats a really good line-up and while it is a lot i don't think they're overdoing it
