I'd sooner believe people would fork over their cash to see blue-skinned people in their underwear than green, evil Keebler elves. Oh...wait...

Comicbookmovie.com is reporting today that Paramount's The Avengers will feature the shape-shifting Skrulls as the main antagonists of their superhero ensemble film. Or at least that's the rumor they overheard. The site's editors are being predictably coy about how they came across this juicy tidbit, but they claim two other unnamed outlets were tipped around the same time and considered it authentic. Regardless of how they got it, if the rumor is true it signals a major, yet understandable deviation from Avengers canon that might have put a crimp in the plotline of the also forthcoming Thor movie. In the original story, Norse jackass Loki tricks the Hulk into going on one of his trademark rampages and the film's titular team unites to stop him. In the film iteration perhaps it'll be the Skrulls engaging in jackassery.

Well, it's not like we don't have time to mull over it--The Avengers isn't due in theaters until some time in 2012. Until then, let's engage in a bit of rumormongering of our own and just say that, oh, Fin Fang Foom will have a cameo as a sassy diner cook with a razor wit. Hey, anything's possible.

I'd personally much prefer the Hulk storyline, though given the fact they robbed him of 90% of his powers in the latest film, may not be as exciting as it should be. Skrulls could be neat so long as they drop some kind of stupid twist in there where the Colonel Rhodes we saw in Iron Man 2 is actually a Skrull, thus explaining why he now looks like Don Cheadle. That one's free, but I got more.

This. I'm afraid this will become too big and fail from trying to do too much.

Yeah... I'm siding with everyone else that the Skrulls mght be cool. But I'd like the Masters of Evil and maybe an Acts of Vengence story.
Same as I'd like to see full on Spidey, Venom, and Carnage in the next Spiderman flick... and maybe that crazy Scarlet Spiderman, so people can see him die. Stupid Scarlet Spidey story... made no sense. As well, how the crap have they not had the Vulture yet?

While I discussed this on CV, I will say here that while I like this idea, I don't know how valid these rumors are nor do I think it would come about.  However I could be wrong.  Most are assuming either Loki or even the Leader will mind-control the Hulk, go on a rampage, and it would be up to the Avengers to assemble against the threat.

Skrulls would also pose a larger budget if they do the shape shifting, and I'd imagine they'd appear as CGI characters (*groan*).  Who knows?  KInd of fun to speculate yet it also can be annoying.

I really don't know about this! The Skrulls look kinda silly.

But in a superhero movie with Thor and Hulk and a dude wearing an American flag, maybe that's not a bad thing.

I think the idea of introducing the Skrulls into the Avengers movie was ruined once the first Iron Man came out. That film established a world with well defined human characters existing in a plausible world. There was no notion of anything otherworldly existing in the film universe of Tony Stark, even if much of the science used in the movie (arc reactors and so forth) was total hogwash.

They couldve avoided this if Stark had a more prominent role in the Incredible Hulk that had him actually interact with Banner in a meaningful way. A scene that had both Hulk and Iron Man in it would have better set up and teased the pure comic book sci fi insanity that awaited in future films. Instead Robert Downey Jr was relegated to a lousy cameo with a drunken William Hurt in what felt like a different movie entirely.  Marvel Studios then fucks up again by not having the events of the Incredible Hulk referenced at all in Iron Man 2 which makes it all feel like that never happened.

So what happens when we have Tony Stark hanging out in his pad when out of nowhere "Oh no! Aliens! Shapeshifting aliens! Thank god Thor is here with his big ass hammer to save us..." Suddenly the audience will have to adapt to a complete shift in the rules and logic of how these movies work and just kinda go with it. And I dont think that will work.

All I can say is that the last time a franchise threw aliens into the mix was called Spider Man 3. Itll make its money but will quickly come to disgust anyone who dared to believe that this movie was actually going to be good. But the studios will have our money anyway so who cares.

Hulk storyline's too short. Hulk goes on a rampage and...what? They unite to stop him? That's one of those hour long Marvel animated movies. Or the start of the Avengers movie. I'd place more money on Kang the Conqueror. Skrulls won't really work because they shapeshift...that only works if you're already attached to the characters and freaking out because you don't know which of them are real.

Ever since I saw Juno & she makes that Pie-Balls joke that's all I think of now when Skrulls come to mind.

Does Paibok have Pie Balls?

I am going to love this movie. But normal people will hate it, and hey will hate thor. Since Iron Man was a semi-believable film that was easy to get involved in. Somehow I don't think a movie about a Norse God, or a movie with a team that has a Norse God as a member will go down well with the masses...

I would be happy just to seem some crazy Ultron action but I suppose to outsiders he's just going to appear to be a silly indestructible robot.

I would have preferred The Red Skull and Viper but, I guess these guys will do.  I usually think of the Skrulls as more of a Fantastic Four enemy, and yes I know the Red Skull is really a Captain America foe, but since he's going to be in the Avengers movie anyway it's a good fit.  I remember reading some Avengers vs Red Skull/Viper stories when I was a kid and think it could work well today.  Everyone still loves to hate Nazis after all.  And Madame Hydra would be hot, too.

I still think by the time this Avengers movie comes out, the audience will be all Marveled out.

Gross....ah.....

Marvel seriously already uses the Skrulls way too much every time they are in a bind as a deus ex plot...

Just give me the Avengers movie with Edward Norton all nervous at the prospect of Avengers coming after him, then have Hulk bust up the Avengers something awful as their plans kinda fail and underestimate the green guy...followed by the team coming up with a new plan that doesn't involve a head on fight with Hulk...except there's still scenes with Iron Man in a Hulkbuster suit wrestling with him and the heroes still trying to subdue him.

Followed by a cliffhanger for some major cosmic villain..Galactus or what have you...there a movie I'd watch...

EDIT: Don't forget Tony Starks in some light-hearted power struggle for leadership against the other heroes.
