New season lacking? and "dumbing down" for non-nerds?

I am a huge fan of this show, always will be no matter which way it goes.. its kinda like Buffy... I still loved it even during the dreaded *shudder* Riley period and always will. This season of BBT is just a bit slow to start for me, there are some big laughs in there as usual.. but its slow to get a good story going.

I am also finding, and wondering if others are feeling it, that they are being really obvious with their nerd/geek references. One of the big things I loved about this series was how much they would drop in the references and those that got it had a laugh and those that did not just missed out. This season feels like they are deliberately explaining every nerd/geek joke and dumbing it down too much for me to appreciate....

Anyone else finding this or am I being too tough?

The problem is not that the show is being "dumbed down". The problem is that you're watching The Big Bang Theory in the first place.

I haven't watched this show in years for the exact same reason. To me, it's always felt like the "nerdy" references they made were pretty obvious and dumb. While that's probably a good idea for making a sitcom that appeals the CBS' main audience, it isn't the show for me.

Actually, I can't think of many shows that succeed at making good, nerdy refernces. It almost always comes across as dumb.

What's wrong with BBT? Also as my mother used to say "If your not interested in the subject why comment?"

@PatVB: It started off well, giving the references a style that allowed those in the know a good giggle.. but this season is just making it blatantly in your face!

@PatVB: Spaced did it well, they made it obvious but in a good way,

Honestly, I'd rather see more of the Bernadette, Penny and Amy Farrah-Fowler trio and their adventures this season. Also, I'm just waiting until Leonard and Priya dump one another and then Leonard gets back together with Penny, because come on, it's a sitcom.

@RockinKemosabe: I love the three girls! I actually wondered last week why we are seeing less of the trio this season.. especially with the humour that could come with "planning the wedding" the whole Leonard Penny thing is getting about as irritating as Ross/Rachel.

@RockinKemosabe: Agreed the only reason I have stuck with the season is the three girls.

@Mistress_Redhead: @FinalArrow: Oh right, I forgot you guys don't have Netflix (yet). But, it looks like the whole show is on Hulu! ...Although I don't know if that site is available on your side of the pond, either.

@FinalArrow: And yes, you're right, Spaced did it right. But just like every BBC comedy, it's over after two seasons.

@Mistress_Redhead: I also disappointed that Wil Wheaton is now friends with Sheldon, it was funnier when they were nemesis's.

I only watched a few episodes but I always found the "smart" jokes to be only deep as much as the first wikipedia paragraph of the topic.

@RockinKemosabe: Sometimes I think it's good that it only goes to two series, prevents it from going on past being good! very few sitcoms manage to hold the same punch past season 2 in my eyes.

@RockinKemosabe: OH god I hated that!! It was hilarious (sorry the Indiana Jones episode still has me wetting my pants thinking about it) and now its just... done.

The show once was great and I myself only watch older episodes of it. I really like how the show was before they introduced these new characters like Amy Farrah Fowler and Bernadette. Five main characters was fine but having seven characters on the show now is just too much. The show has kind of lost it I feel because well it isn't as funny as it used to be. Now that more people watch it, the show can't be how it used to.

The problem is it killed Community and it was never funny.

I started one episode on an airplane and turned it off half way through. The stereotypical "look how nerdy we are" shit made me want to puke.

I have always felt this way about the big bang theory. It's a drastic dumbing down of nerd culture for mass consumption. It makes nerds safe and funny so that people can laugh at them in the most derogatory kind of way. I don't blame other people for watching it but for me it feels offensive. Community is the nerd humor that i prefer since it doesn't talk down to me like i'm a child. I know i'm being harsh. Sorry. I'll go away now.
