The Bourne Legacy is a stand alone entry in the series, featuring Jeremy Renner in the lead role.
Matt Damon (who played Jason Bourne in the original Bourne trilogy) declined to return to the role for the fourth film unless Paul Greengrass (the director of the last two films in the orignal Bourne trilogy) returned to direct. As a result the film was re-conceived as a prequel and the search for a new director and lead actor began.

The Bourne Legacy is a new entry in the Bourne series but not featuring the character of Jason Bourne due to Matt Damon deciding to leave the series. Jeremy Renner was then cast as the lead character in the film. Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Viola Davis were also brought on to play roles in the film with Edward Norton rumored to be playing the villian. Later, Oscar Isaac was announced to be playing "Number 3", another subject of Operation Treadstone. Oscar was at one point considered for the title role.
The original book is actually a sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum written by Eric Van Lustbader who took over the Bourne series after Robert Ludlum had passed away. He went on to write five other Bourne novels with a seventh novel scheduled to be released in 2012. Since the book is a sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum that makes this movie a book adaptation in name only, whereas the previous three movies at least used story elements from the original books.
