A 2004 sequel to the movie Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick follow Riddick as he takes on the Necromongers, a religious cult that travels around the universe taking over entire planets. Despite the cult hit of the first in the series Chronicles wasn't received as kindly by fans and critics alike, despite this Riddick became a property and another sequel is reportedly going to be made.
The Necromongers are a religious race that is moving steadily across the galaxy taking over planets in their wake hoping to find the Underverse, an afterlife like place where death has no impact. The leader of the Necromongers, Lord Marshal played by Colm Feore, is commanding his armies to take over planets in hopes of changing their citizens to Necromongers and killing any who refuse to. Richard Riddick, played by Vin Diesel, has been discovered on a cold planet in space by the bounty hunter Toombs. Toombs is trying collect the money on Riddick's head but underestimates Riddick's skills and quickly finds his mostly killed and Riddick making off with his ship.
Riddick discovers that the bounty placed on him was originally set on Helion Prime and sets his course there. On Helion Riddick finds Imam, played by Keith David, and thinks he is the one who set the bounty. Imam tells him he only told where Riddick might be, and tells Riddick that Jack, another survivor from Riddick's previous adventures, had gone off looking for him nearly five years ago. Soon Aereon arrives, an elemental who set up Riddick's arrival on Helion and tells him he is apart of a prophecy. The prophecy states that Riddick will be the one who rises up again an evil and bring the universe back to a state of balance, implying that the Necromongers are that evil.
Just as Aereon finishes her story the Necromongers arrive at their next destination for conquest, Helion Prime. They easily slice through the planets defenses and kill Imam which upsets Riddick who rushes to the city square. There Lord Marshal has gathered many of Helion's citizens urging them to convert to become Necromongers or face death. Riddick openly challenges the killer of Imam and is able to defeat him, Marshal recognizes Riddick's strange abilities and has him taken the a fortress in hopes of confirming his identity.
There a psychic, Quasi-Deads, reads Riddick and says he is a Furyan, an ancient and powerful alien race long thought to be extinct. Lord Marshal orders Riddick's execution but watches him escape before he runs into Toombs. Riddick gladly gets captured by Toombs and his new crew rather than face death. Toombs takes Riddick to Crematoria, a planet with temperatures so hot that standing on the surface would kill you instantly which just so happens to be an underground prison world. This is where Riddick is reunited with Jack, now named Kyra, who initially blames Riddick for leaving them and going off on his own.
On Helion, Lord Marshal dispatches his commander Vaako to seek out Riddick and kill him. Vaako gathers a group of warriors and a Purifier, wondering why Marshal is so afraid of one man. Along with his power hungry wife, Dame Vaako, the two discover that is was Marshal who destroyed the Furyan home-world after hearing the prophecy that a Furyan would destroy the Necromongers.
While trying to turn Riddick in, Toombs quickly gets into an argument with the prison warden over the bounty on his head. The warden soon discovers that the Necromongers have followed Riddick's path to the prison. Angered over Toomb's idiocy the prison staff open fire and flee to reach the closest hangar before the Necromongers arrive. Riddick, Kyra, and a few prisoners all decide to take the planet's surface in hopes of making it to the hangar before the guards can. The surface was in the perfect balance between the extreme temperatures that plague is surfaces allowing the group to reach the hangar just in time to defeat the prison guards and warden.
But before Riddick and anyone can take off the Necromongers arrive and Vaako and Riddick face off. Vaako is only just able to defeat Riddick and leaves his unconscious body to fry in the planet's rising sun. Vaako kidnaps Kyra, who thinks Riddick must be dead, and flees with the remaining Necromongers. Riddick almost dies but the Purifier saves him, telling Riddick that Marshal won't kill him if he promises not to kill Marshal but since Vaako assumes Riddick to be dead and that will leave Marshal vulnerable to Riddick's attack.
Vaako returns claiming victory and is promoted by Lord Marshal but who isn't convinced that Riddick is entirely dead, issuing a final protocol to destroy all life on Helion Prime. Dame Vaako spots Riddick posing as one of the Necromonger warriors and rushes to warn Vaako, suggesting he let Riddick fight Marshal and rush in to kill Marshal at the last moment, thus taking his place as per Necrmonger law. Riddick goes before Marshal who reveals to Riddick that Kyra has been converted. Despite the prophecy Marshal's powers are too much for Riddick and quickly Marshal is about to deliver the final killing blow.
Just as Marshal is about to kill him Kyra stabs him in the back, causing the Marshal to hit her across the room nearly killing her. Vaako notices the chance and goes after Marshal who just dodges the attack. Vaako's attack has given Riddick the perfect opportunity and he is able to stab and kill Marshal. Riddick rushes over to Kyra who dies in his arms. Overcome with grief Riddick sits down on Marshal's former throne and the legion of Necromongers bows before him. After all, you keep what you kill.
