Do you think Dark Knight Rises will beat Harry Potter's weekend?

Deathly Hallows Part II beat TDK's opening weekend by a full ten million dollars, although it didn't manage to beat TDK's first Saturday, oddly enough. I'm curious if anyone thinks TDKR has a chance to beat it next year. Obviously TDKR is a great property, but TDK also had the "benefit" of the Heath Ledger stuff pushing interest. Also, can't discount the fact that DHII was two hours long, allowing them to put in an extra screening a day; if TDKR is 2 hours 30 long that might hurt it.

Should be interesting! Of course, if they launch TDKR on a Wednesday, that'll mess everything up.

The running time for The Dark Knight was 2 hours and 30 minutes and was able to make the record. 30 extra minutes is not meaningful when you have 17 screens devoted for a single film.

I don't know. I think it might. Nolan is enough of a name, The Dark Knight was a massive success. They are billing it as an end of the trilogy so I'd think it might breaking HP's record.

Also, I read if you account for inflation that the Dark Knight is around 178 dollars which seems insane considering its been a few years.

No , and not because of my personal tastes ( I like the Dark knight more than Potter any day of the week) but rather Harry Potter was a cultural phenomena that was bigger than Batman ever was , despite of Nola's take on it.

It could, but I have my doubts.

No, the shocking conclusion to the Twilight saga will destroy them all.

I feel like the Joker, a known villain, was a big contributing factor to the Dark Knight's success. I feel like most people don't know of Bane or still get a bitter taste in their mouth from the word "Catwoman." I'm sure TDKR will sell gangbusters, but HP7pt2 bested TDK's sales. I just feel like TDKR won't even do as well as TDK.

I hope...
But i don't think it will.

In a weird way i find it weird that so many more people were interested in part 2.
I know why.. just... ye.

Not unless one of the main cast members dies beforehand. I don't think Batman is the one to look for to beat Potter.

I really doubt it. HP has both 3D and IMAX revenue whereas TDKR only has IMAX. I do wonder if TDKR will out preform it's predecessor though, since like most people are saying the allure of the Joker/Ledger stuff really helped market and sell that movie to people. I'm sure it will do extraordinarily over all, but I dunno if as many people will be drawn to it opening weekend.

No, The Dark Knight only got a huge amount of attention because of Heath Ledger's death whereas Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part II because it's a big deal, and a lot of people like Harry Potter.

Yes.

Not at all. They can make the DKR trailer 90% flashbacks to Heath Ledger but eventually people are going to learn about this much less compelling villain and it just won't be as alluring. Its like a starting band playing after the seasoned headliner. The plan with TDK was to have Joker again, so this 3rd movie is "plan B" because an actor died and the character died with him. Im not that interested in this contingiency plan script, I wanna see what TDK was originally planned to be but that movie will never happen.

The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises also aren't in 3D, so it doesn't have the extra money coming in that Harry Potter did.

I hope it does(not because I don't love DHII, because I did very much), but I doubt it.

Who gives a shit if a movie makes the most money?  All I care is that good movies makes a profit and bad movies don't so the studios are encouraged not to make shitty movies.  I just hope the third of Nolan's Batman movies doesn't pull a Spider-Man 3 or more appropriately a Batman Forever.

Question for non North American Screeners(is that the correct term?): Is Batman a big deal in your country?

@not_a_bumblebee:  Batman is pretty huge here. His old 60's show can still be found somewhere on television.

Boy. I think it has a shot of doing it, but I don't think it will. The Dark Knight had a lot going for it when it came out, and I think the sequel will be huge, but probably not crack the Harry Potter finale numbers. It'll be interesting to see, though!

Batman appeals to a much larger area of people when compared to Potter. I was shocked when HP7 pulled in that bank. If any movie has a shot at toppling that record it's TDKR. Nolan's clout among regular movie goers has gone up to ungodly levels after Inception and TDK.
