The Event Headed To SyFy?

"What is that...stench???"
"What is that...stench???"

Take this one with a whole salt lick, but Deadline is saying that The Event might find a home on SyFy after being cancelled on NBC. I confess that I don't have much love for The Event after watching the first few episodes; I tried to stay up to date via episode recaps, but they just got more and more convoluted as time went on. I watched a bit of the final episode, but nothing in it really grabbed me. It did have a pretty good ending to the season, though, so maybe that's enough to spur it on for one last attempt at glory on cable.

Deadline's saying that it wouldn't be a full series; a more likely occurrence would be for it to come back as a miniseries. Shifting series from network to cable has been done before, but it's pretty rare; your budgets are pretty limited on cable, and I'm guessing many of the roles would have to be recast. Plus there's the factor of the show failing pretty hard on network, and that's after they pushed it pretty broadly with promos. I'm sure SyFy would be happy to get a show that brought in four million viewers a week, but I doubt everyone would follow it from NBC. Still, stranger things have happened. I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone on Screened have a good word for The Event, but if you're excited by this, let us know in the comments.

As much as I'd like to see some good programming added to the network, I guess the fact that it's science fiction will have to be enough.

Excitement . . . meh.

Aren't NBC and SyFy still sister networks, easily passing off onto each other shows and bad habits of poor programming.  Not to say I disliked The Event.  I didn't watch it until after it returned from its break, and then I caught up quickly (trade paperback style), and mostly enjoyed the back to back episodes.  I'd really like to see a mini series conclude what would have tried to drag out over years.  Frankly, the networks would do well by adopting more mini-series than full series and then bring back properties that have the potential for continued mini-series.

As far as SyFy and NBC, no trust nor love of their ability to produce or rescue a series.  Even if a sci fi channel is the more logical place for the Event, it's not a logical network with its cooking and wrestling shows.

Hey, who would care about a Stargate movie? Nobody loved that franchise or anything... THE EVENT! Pick that shit up!

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the subject.

The only thing I really enjoyed about the show was its visual effects.  Everything else, blah.

I liked the show at the start, but it just died down for me after the first 5 episodes or so.
I didn't care to keep up.

It had such an interesting plot but the script couldn't live up to it.

Even though I didn't really like The Event past the first few episodes, I really wish this practice would become more common. There's been plenty of shows over the years that probably could have done very well on cable even though they didn't get very good ratings on the network channels.

I watched the whole series from beginning to end. I thought it started out awful and got mildly better when they took the typical hard ass political guy that disagrees with everything the president says and turned him into actual sympathetic human being. Nevertheless, the writing was always a slave to the ludicrous plot, and never to the characters. The finale was a train wreck of cheesy revelations and very little closure. Way to say FU to the few people that actually watched this show.

I watched it out of curiosity, and kept with it because I knew this thing was going to get cancelled anyway, so I was hoping they'd just lay the cards on the table and do all sorts of crazy story ideas that they wanted to save for potential seasons down the line. Nevertheless, I've no desire to see it continue, especially if they have to lower the budget and reduce/replace actors.

Out of all the serialized shows to wrap up, they want this one? What about Surface? FlashForward? And so on, and etc.

Against all odds (for myself anyway), I actually really enjoyed the first season of The Event. I kept expecting to lose interest, or to be dumbfounded by its own stupidity (a la FlashForward), but I kept watching. After last week's season finale, I decided to rewatch the entire season, to try to see if it would be then that I would find the holes.

Honestly, I didn't find much bad about it. Sure, there are some convoluted parts of it, like any mythological-based TV series that has season-wide arcs, but the one thing that struck me was how the writers seemed to know where they were taking the story. They may not have the entire show planned out from start to finish, but there was enough foreshadowing in the early episodes for events later on that gave me the impression that there is a solid plan on where the story will go.

I wasn't surprised about the low ratings, or NBC's decision to axe the show. TV in of itself is dying; without a cheap production budget or an easy, tried-and-true formula that viewers want, a show like The Event does not really stand a chance anymore. It's why I was glad LOST got its chance to hook in viewers back in 04 and 05 as opposed to having to start now.

So, I guess I am one of those people who will be excited to see if SyFy picks up the miniseries. It would be unfortunate not to see this story come to an end, even one that is forced to happen over a few hours.

Syfy have said on their Twitter (@Syfy) around the time this article was posted that they have no plans to pick up The Event. A relief!

I made it to the episode where this young guy and the female FBI agent...
the President agreeing to release the 'aliens' but then didn't - ... lost interest beyond that.

I don't like shows trying to milk the thinnest plot-lines, repeating again and again the same thing:

  • promise of progression
  • small progression
  • return to status quo ante (before the changes)

That's just bad writing and only serves to keep people watching. A -> B -> C-> I like linear progression, even in TV shows. It's good theatre tradition. Maybe the show got better over time, but I will never know. Life's too short.

The same SyFy that cancelled Universe when it had finally picked up steam. Yeeeaaah. I liked The Event more than most people (more than Rorie at least) but having it pretty much replace the last hail mary of the Stargate franchise, noooo thank you.

I'd rather see a new mini series of Farscape... ;-)

@redrohx

Frell yeah we need more Farscape. Instead of ressurecting some convoluted, poorly acted and boring dren like the Event that couldn't even survive despite NBC's nonstop pimping, lets bring back a show that was actually sucessful and real science fiction.  No tv show has come close to matching Farscape in its spectacular mix of amazing complex characters and storytelling, along with a wickedly fresh and deranged sense of humour. Plus who can't love a show that features a greedy, arrogant, helium farting character who happens to be a MUPPET.
