I've been looking forward to The Expendables, like most everyone has, since word first got out that Sylvester Stallone was assembling the action movie team of all action movie teams. Now that it's finally here, question is, would it be worth a damn or would it be a huge disappointment?
Well, I can answer that with another question. Do you like to see dudes cut, stab, shoot and maim each other with blatant disregard for their own livelihoods? Do you like to see shit blown up reeeeal good? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you're probably not even reading this right now and are probably standing in line to see Eat Pray Lo..., er I mean The Expendables.
The Expendables is a pretty amazing display of what an 80's style action movie would be if it were made in 2010. Tons of action, turned up to eleven in every way possible. The explosions are bigger, the punches hit harder, just everything is extremely fun and entertaining to watch. You could really tell Stallone put everything he had into this thing. The fight scenes were amazingly brutal in just about every way. Everything from the opening scene on steadily ramps up and builds up to a final third of the movie which is a glorious ballet of boom.
DUDE PUNCHING ANOTHER DUDE WHO IS ON FIRE IN THE FACE. Just sayin'.
That's not to say The Expendables isn't without it's faults. The middle of the film is kinda drags and it's attempt at drama kinda falls flat. Although I really enjoyed the monologue that Mickey Rourke had, even if it was a bit ham handed at times. Also, with everyone and their mother in this movie, some characters seem to take a backseat to Stallone and Statham who essentially are the focus of the group. Especially Terry Crews who I thought was criminally underused. Although he totally made up for it with one moment towards the end.
This definitely takes the crown from The A-Team as the most fun movie I've seen all summer. It's big, it's dumb, it's loud, it's just the thing that summer movies are meant to be.
