Too long?

Me and my family watched this for the first time about a month ago. I really digged the movie, but there were definitely times when I felt the movie was waaaay too long. I mean, it all really fit together at the end, so it was all good. But I can't show this to my friends and expect them to like it. People these days have super small attention-spans, and I doubt that people who have never seen any Spaghetti Westerns will watch this. So I ask you, the screened community, is TGTBTU too long and if so, how do I convince people to stay and watch the whole thing?

I believe its perfect in lenght.  The long time allowed leone to set up some amazing set pieces and really develope an awsome visual style.   I think many people share this complaint of being to long with Once Upon a Time in the West (you should watch that too).  leone I think is a master of knowing how to make a 3hr movie feel really short.

I adore Leone, but I always found TGTBTU to be slightly over done towards the end.

I think the TGTBTU is a great film, but highly over-rated.  In the Man With No Name trilogy, TGTBTU is my least favourite.

Popular opinion will tell you that TGTBTU is the best Western, but true Western/Leone fans, like yours truly, will tell you that the best Western ever is actually, Once Upon A Time In The West

It is also a long film, but it has a big, Hollywood budget, and is actually filmed in the American West, as opposed to Italy's deserts.  It has the most tense gun fights I've ever seen.  henry Fonda is brilliant as the bad-guy, Frank; and Charles Bronson, with his beef-jerky face, tears up the screen.

Yeah, the blowing up of the bridge definitely felt off-putting at that point

That is bullshit my friend, watch One Upon a Time in America. 4 hours, 75% of it being pointless crap that should have been edited down. Seriously, Leone figured out how to ruin a mafia movie, which I didn't think was possible.

bows down, this sir, is the absolute truth.  You forgot to mention that it also had the best performances of any western, best soundtrack, costume, cinematography lol etc etc

I actually stand that OUATITW is the best movie ever made.
