New Pictures of The Hobbit Look Appropriately Hobbity

While there was likely little doubt that a Hobbit movie directed by Peter Jackson would look exactly as Hobbit-ish as it should, let the above photo of Martin Freeman decked out in the signature baggy trousers and pointy ears of Bilbo Baggins assuage any fears you may have had. That's a Hobbit, dammit.

Entertainment Weekly also posted a new picture of Ian McKellen doing his Gandalf thing, which you can check out in their exclusive gallery. It's exactly what you would want Ian McKellen as Gandalf to look like. So, basically, this whole movie is a foregone conclusion. Now let's spend the next year and a half obsessively looking at every photo released for the film while continually reacting in a thoroughly unsurprised manner.

Also of note: the shoot for the two films is a staggering 254 days, coming up only a week or two short of the combined filming of all three Lord Of The Rings movies, despite presumably being a few hours shorter. That's...a pretty big time commitment.

I guess I'm looking forward to this? More Lord of the Rings isn't a bad thing, I'm just tired of hearing about this movie being made, glad to see it's finally underway.

I actually would like to see this. Liked the book way more then I liked the Lord of the Rings books.

Yup, he looks like a hobbit. And the dwarves look like dwarves and the elfs like elfs. Moving on. I'm kind of LOTR'd out.

I'm a big Martin Freeman fan, so I'm really looking forward to this film :) Wonder if the new Sherlock episodes are already shot or if they have to wait till this is done filming!

I agree with the title of this article. That is one hobbity hobbit.

Yeah, I know it's way too soon for more, the last LOTR only came out seven and a half years ago...

Seriously though, I think The Hobbit is a better read (by virtue of being far shorter), and should make a great on-screen adventure. Beorn, Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Lake-town, Smaug, Battle of Five Armies... Awesome stuff.

I know it's too soon to be excited about something, but I'm excited about this.

The Gandalf pic had me grinning.

I have an intense dislike for Martin Freeman but might still see this for more Gandalf.

How long do you reckon they'll be?

YES. The Hobbit was the first large book that I ever read through by myself, at the wee age of seven. Such good memories.

I'm really looking forward to these movies purely because The Hobbit is so much more adaptable than LOTR.  It had a lot less filler along the lines of "blah who was the son of blahdeblah, who in those days ruled from elftown to dwarfdale, and there was much rejoicing and song and so forth!" Much more of a straight up story. I am a little worried about where they're gonna make the cut between the two films. Just after Misty Mountains? After Mirkwood? Having it as two films really does seem like a money grab.

The only thing I'm going to enjoy in this film, the spiders in Mirkwood, the Battle of Five armies and THAT dragon.

Pictures of Gandalf? *runs to the photo gallery*

Awesome

However, why the f*** is the shoot so many days? Especially since 2 movies is definitely less than 3. That seems inefficient.

But hey, at least this movie is happening finally! I thought MGM's meddling would seriously derail this thing dozens of times by now.

254 days? Are they making 4 movies?

looks exactly like I kind of knew it would.

I am really hoping that Peter can bring one thing to this movie that no other director has been able to for the last decade or two - "Quaint"

The origional book was a quaint childrens tale of a doddering old Hobbit reluctantly forced into an adventure. It just seems that similar childrents books, like the Narnia series, has all the 'quaint' stripped out, and a lot of action, CG graphics, and teenage angst inserted in where it was not needed. The Narnia series also slips in romance, which I feel is totally in opposition to the original authors intents.

In the end, I hope that Peter Jackson takes a huge risk, and creases this beloved old book in a suitablyold-fashioned style.

The Hobbits were my least favourite race present in Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit Production Diary 6: More Location Shooting!

The Hobbit's epic 250-day shoot continues apace, but Peter Jackson & Andy Serkis still have time to show off the majestic climes of New Zealand for us.

Set of The Hobbit, or renaissance fair? You be the judge.

Trailer: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Have you heard of this movie? I'm not sure what it's about. I think it's a documentary about little people in New Zealand.

Behind The Scenes On The Hobbit: Middle-Earth In 3D

Peter Jackson lovingly fondles around three million dollars in cameras in this look at the ongoing filming. But some of them are named for dogs, so I can't blame him.
