Why is there a subtitle "An Unexpected Journey"?

Why did there have to be a subtitle? Do people really remember the 1977 version to get confused? Don't loads of movies get called the same thing (The Thing) even when they're new versions?

Whoever the studio execs or producers who decided to put an unnecessary subtitle to this movie deserve to be fired.

Defend this shit, I dare you.

Because this is part 1 of the movie. Part 2 comes out in 2013.

Yep, this. I think they wanted to avoid calling the two movies "The Hobbit Part 1" and "The Hobbit Part 2." Psychologically, giving them separate subtitles will make them seem like two full movies instead of two halves.

@PatVB: They could have avoided that problem by just giving a really long and forgettable name like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.

You did not get his point at all.

@Black_Rose: I did, he said the studio didn't want people to feel like they were getting only half a story.

I'm saying that by giving it a long name that no one will use no one will even pay attention to that fact.

its not unnecessary at all, I assume that its the title for Bilbo's novel just like There and Back Again (part 2)

The Hobbit Production Diary 6: More Location Shooting!

The Hobbit's epic 250-day shoot continues apace, but Peter Jackson & Andy Serkis still have time to show off the majestic climes of New Zealand for us.

Set of The Hobbit, or renaissance fair? You be the judge.

Trailer: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Have you heard of this movie? I'm not sure what it's about. I think it's a documentary about little people in New Zealand.

Behind The Scenes On The Hobbit: Middle-Earth In 3D

Peter Jackson lovingly fondles around three million dollars in cameras in this look at the ongoing filming. But some of them are named for dogs, so I can't blame him.
