Well that is a lot of money. Only The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Deathly Hollows Part 2 ($169.2 million) made more on their opening weekends.

In general we're seeing a pretty crazy upward trend over time, not surprising given ticket prices, though TDK and Hunger Games both made it without 3D, which is an awesome trend. Still, yeah, you get a movie that appeals to all demographics, you're going to put a hell of a lot of butts into seats. Amazing how that works, huh?
Surprisingly enough, this news doesn't strike me as surprising. I mean, no derision implied or anything, but the book series is already held in staggeringly high-regard, and the film has been ubiquitously advertised to an almost superlative degree. Jennifer Lawrence is also an auspicious lass, so I have no problem with her appearing in some veritable money-makers.

Trailer 3: The Hunger Games
After reading these books, I'm curious as to how they're going to faithfully adapt the gorier portions into a PG-13 movie, but I guess we'll find out in March. They're certainly not showing much in these trailers. |
