When the series was first being produced, CBS demanded that the name of Bruce Banner (the alter ego of the Hulk) be changed as they felt that the name was "too gay-ish". The producer, Kenneth Johnson changed the first name to David, to honor his son and stuck the name of Bruce as the character's middle name.
Originally, when first developing the series Kenneth Johnson suggested changing the skin color of the Hulk to red as "red was the color of rage". However Stan Lee, the creator of the character refused to allow it, proclaiming that the green coloration was an iconic part of the character. Ironically enough several decades later in 2008; Marvel would create a Red Hulk whose skin color was red.
